Question:
Mr. Reagan, should an. independent Palestine be recognized?

REAGAN'S Answer:
I don't think this whole propaganda is fair. Palestine, as a British mandate, was divided into
Jordan and Israel. Jordan is 80% of Palestine . . . The Palestinians are Arabs, they speak
that language. I think they have a heritage in a number of countries and I know that the
palestinians' problem must be solved. I don't think it is a 100% Israeli problem. I think if you
want to divide it, it's 80% Jordan's problem.

THE DETROIT NEWS—January 13, 1980

THIS MAP IS A LIE.
ONLY PART OF PALESTINE IS SHOWN

THESE ARE THE ACTUAL
BOUNDARIES OF "PALESTINE"

Historic Palestine recognized by the League of Nations and the
United Nations Charter. It includes Jordan (the Arab Palestine)
and Israel (the Jewish Palestine).

Lies about the boundaries of Palestine are being used to justify terrorism and murder.

Those calling themselves "Palestinians" say they are a homeless, stateless people. THEY LIE.

There is already an independent Arab Country of "Palestine." It is JORDAN — a palestinian home-
land, along with 20 other Arab states.

The left-wing Shinui
movement, and the Peace

dently called for with-
drawal of Israeli forces from
the Beirut area and from

meetings between Gemayel
and Begin and Sharon had

agreed to meet Arafat "who
wants to destroy Israel and
thus complete the work of
the Nazis."
Those remarks were
broadcast after the Israeli
Cabinet's Sunday session at
which the Pope's reported
readiness to meet Arafat
was roundly condemned.
The Vatican statement
said: "The declaration by
an authoritative Israeli
government official Sun-
day in Jerusalem con-
tains words that are more
than surprising, almost
incredible. They make us
believe that they have
forgotten, albeit in an
emotional context with,
however, very little ob-
jective justification, how
much the Pope, the Holy
See, the Catholic Church
with its pastors and its
organizations in various
countries did — in the
consciousness of fulfil-
ling a highest Christian
human duty — to protect
and save thousands and
thousands of Jews before
and during the second
World War.
"These are the facts
which should be well known
and of which so many Jews
who now live in Israel and
in the world were the be-
neficiaries or witnesses.

ing World War II.
A statement released by
the Vatican Press Office on
Monday and published in
the official Vatican news-
paper, L'Osservatore
Romano, called the charges
"an outrage against truth"
and an insult to the person
of the Pope.
The
remarks
in
Jerusalem on Sunday by the
unidentified official were-
made in advance of the
Pope's 25-minute meeting
Wednesday with PLO chief
Yasir Arafat. Arafat
attended the 69th Interpar-
liamentary Union confer-
ence as an observer.
The Vatican an-
nounced over the
weekend that the Pope
"is disposed to meet Yasir
Arafat regarding the suf-
ferings and rights of the
Palestinian people of
which the Pope spoke re-
cently."
The meeting, which was
held Wednesday, aroused a
storm of protest from the Is-
rael government and
Jewish organizations and
leaders here and abroad. On
Sunday, a person in
Jerusalem identified only
as a senior official, de-
nounced the Roman
Catholic Church which he
said failed to speak out
against the German annihi-
lation of Jews in Europe or

interview in this week's
Time magazine that the
time had come for the
Lebanese government to
"take on the responsibility
for security on Lebanese soil
and ensure that never again
will our neighbors be in
danger from actions
launched from Lebanon."
Gemayel said that for
the past 20 years the
Lebanese government
"has not taken responsi-
bility for the security of
south Lebanon or its
borders. Such groups as
the PLO, the Japanese
Red Army and the Italian
Red Brigades used the
south as a base of opeta-
lions, endangering many
countries. From the Is-
raeli viewpoint, I under-
stand why they have to
keep not only one eye but
both eyes on that region."

He pointed out that the
PLO "bears tremendous re-
sponsibility for what has
happened in Lebanon since
1968. It is no accident that
they are not wanted by
other Arab states. The best
thing for the remaining
PLO fighters is to leave
Lebanon without provoking
more trouble."
Gemayel asserted, "We
have no more room for little
private armies . . . only
(the) Lebanese army . . .
This is the only guarantee
for our defense, so that the
Israelis or the U.S. marines
or United Nations forces
won't have to be coming in
all the time."
