Old City Sewage System
to Have Massive Overhaul
JERUSALEM — The
coming of spring and sum-
mer in the Holy Land brings
an invasion of archeological
teams working on numer-
ous digs. But efforts to un-
earth valuable artifacts
from beneath the desert are
not the only excavations
going on in Israel these
days.
Excavations of a more
practical nature are being
carried out on a large scale
inside the narrow alleyways
of the Old City, particularly
the Christian and Moslem
quarters.
Workers are digging
trenches to replace the
rapidly decaying plumbing
that has existed since Tur-
laron nal\I mu'?
kish times. Gone are the
antiquated sewers whose
seepages had undermined
many of the buildings in
these quarters and
threatened to cause their
collapse. Numerous stone
buttresses have been built,
with careful attention to
architectural detail, to sup-
port endangered buildings.
Electricity and telephone
cables, which had disfig-
ured the Old City's lanes
have been placed under-
ground and a television
cable system is being in-
stalled that will eventually
eliminate the unsightly an-
tennas protruding above
the picturesque cupolas of
the Old City.
