But efforts to un- earth valuable artifacts from beneath the desert are not the only excavations going on in Israel these days. Excavations of a more practical nature are being carried out on a large scale inside the narrow alleyways of the Old City, particularly the Christian and Moslem quarters. Workers are digging trenches to replace the rapidly decaying plumbing that has existed since Tur- laron nal\I mu'? kish times. Gone are the antiquated sewers whose seepages had undermined many of the buildings in these quarters and threatened to cause their collapse. Numerous stone buttresses have been built, with careful attention to architectural detail, to sup- port endangered buildings.
