Kalb Reviews New Washington
Attitude Toward State of Israel

Minutes before President
Reagan was to deliver a na-
tionally televised Middle
East policy statement, TV
correspondent Marvin Kalb
was warning a Detroit Al-
lied Jewish Campaign
audience of the ominous
signs to be revealed in that
administration statement.
"I'm not saying that
(Washington) is anti-
Israel," he told the Sept. 1
gathering at Adat Shalom
Synagogue, "but it is no
longer automatically pro-
Israel."
Kalb, who also addressed
a major gifts meeting of
women that afternoon at
the home of Helen Zucker-
man, drew more than 200
persons to the evening
gathering. It was an-
nounced that the two meet-
ings, coupled with earlier
fund-raisings, have yielded
a 1983 Campaign total to
date of $6,284,000 plus
$3,176,000 for the Israel
Emergency Fund.
Kalb
described
President Reagan as hav-
ing been "instinctively"
pro-Israel before his elec-
tion. Now, along with a
changing mood on
Capitol Hill, Reagan and
his closest advisers are
doing more "thinking"
and less "operating by
instinct," the journalist
said.
With Israel in a strong
military position following
the war in Lebanon,
"America's position in the
Middle East has never been
stronger," said Kalb. "But
when you have one friend
(the U.S.) in the world, and
when that friend manifests
obvious exasperation with
its ally in the Middle East,
that ally is more vulnerable
and alone than ever before."
Mentioning Reagan's ad-
visers by name, Kalb said
that the Secretary of State,
