will be asking congregants
to remember their fellow
Jews in need here and
around the world with a
pledge to the 1983 Allied
Jewish Campaign and Is-
rael Emergency Fund.
As they stated in a signed
advertisement in today's
Jewish News, the congrega-

tional rabbis of Detroit "are
mindful that, wherever we
live and whatever our cir-
cumstances, all Jews are re-
sponsible for each other."
They said that this principle
is particularly appropriate
now with the approach of
Rosh Hashana, a time of
self-evaluation.

The rabbis took note of
the unusually hard year
world Jewry has suffered.
The ad states, "In the af-
termath of the war in Leba-
non, there is no rejoicing in
the homes of Israel. The
tragic loss of life has been
too staggering, the tremen-
dous costs of mending and
rebuilding too financially
burdensome to dismiss in
talk of 'victory.' "
With anti-Semitic inci-
dents on the rise in
Europe, and an increas-
ingly desperate situation
for Jews in the Soviet
Union and Ethiopia,
American Jewry's sup-
port is all-important,
stated the rabbis. The
"economic hardship that
has befallen many of our
families and the aged
right here at home" also
has meant greater de-
mands on communal
agencies that receive
support from the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
The rabbis are calling on
members of Detroit's
Jewish community to in-
crease their previous Cam-
paign pledges, if possible, to
reflect the extraordinary
need for funds world Jewry
requires this year. In addi-
tion to a Campaign gift,
Jews are being asked to con-
tribute to a one-time Israel
Emergency Fund, which
will raise cash— payable by
March 15 — to maintain es-
sential social services and
programs in Israel cut back
by the recent war in Leba-
non.
