With the greater part of
rich people, the chief
enjoyment of riches consists
in the parade of riches,
which in their eyes is never
so complete as when they
appear to possess those de-

which nobody can possess
but themselves. --

Israel Given Radio Contract
for U.S. Military Vehicles
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Tadiran, Israel Electronic
Industry, was awarded a
$39 million contract by the
U.S. Army to build radios
for the M-I Battle Tank and
other military vehicles, it
was announced by the Pen-
tagon. Tadiran, which is 44
percent owned by GTE In-
ternational, said it plans to
build the radios in Holon.
The decision to award
Tadiran the contract fol-
lowed a decision by
E-Systems of Dallas, Texas,
to withdraw its court chal-
lenge to stop the award on
grounds that Tadiran had
been given preferential
treatment by the Pentagon.
The Dallas firm had
asked for a temporary in-
junction against the award,
contending that Tadiran did
not comply with Pentagon
labor, environmental and
non-discriminatory regula-
tions governing contracts.
The Israeli firm said such
U.S. regulations were not
applicable to its bid.

The president of the Asso-
ciation for Retarded
Citizens/Downriver has
asked the Wayne County
Board of Commissioners to
consider removing High-
land Park Mayor Robert
Blackwell from the
Detroit-Wayne Community
Mental Health Board.
Lois Stark said that on
Aug. 25, Blackwell asked
who was served by the
Jewish Vocational Service
because he didn't think
"Jews took welfare."
JVS provides mental
health services under con-
tract with the board.
Ms. Stark said Mayor
Blackwell's comments were
discriminatory and might
be considered anti-Semitic.
Day Schools, UHS Classes Begin
Detroit's largest Jewish
schools will open for classes
this week. The three Jewish
day schools are scheduled to
resume classes Wednesday.
United Hebrew Schools will
have its first day of after-
noon classes on Tuesday.
Rabbi Norman Kahn of
Yeshivath Beth Yehuda re-
ports a record enrollment of
nearly 600 students in all
its divisions, encompassing
nursery school through
college-age.
Rabbi Kahn said the
school is continuing to ex-
perience financial difficul-
ties and is awaiting a meet-
ing with a committee of the
Jewish Welfare Federation
to discuss the school's allo-
cation from the Allied
Jewish Campaign.
Akiva Hebrew Day

enced financial prob-
lems. It filed for Chapter

classes that were held at

NEW YORK — The
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith has asked the
U.S. Supreme Court to
reinstate the denial of tax
exempt status for colleges
that practice racial dis-
crimination.
In a friend-of-the-court
brief filed last week, the
league challenged the right
of tax exemption for Bob
Jones University of Green-
ville, S.C., and Goldsboro
Christian Schools of
Goldsboro, N.C.
- The case grew out of a suit
filed by Bob Jones and
Goldsboro contesting the
right of the Internal Reve-
nue Service to deny them
tax exempt status. The
position was upheld by the
Justice Department last
January.
