Danny Raskin's

The Best of Everything

BACK ON JULY 4,
1976, Joe and Nan Bird
opened their Crabbie Joe's
on Michigan in Dearborn
. . . still going strong .. .
with Naomi Battles, gen-
eral manager and day hos-
tess . . . and Joyce Gamble,
evening hostess . . . both
doing fine jobs to much cus-
tomer satisfaction.
The huge, but intimate-
style seafood restaurant
seats 250 in booths and ta-
bles . . . with warm tones for
relaxed dining.
Escargots come in the
shell, not on bread, mush-
rooms or whatever . . . The
dinner menu has 18 fish or
seafood entrees, 11 seafood
appetizers, four salads (six
dressings), steak, prime rib,
chicken Cordon Bleu, steak
sandwiches among others
and homemade soups .. .
Early bird specials at Crab-
bie Joe's are Monday -
Thursday, 4 to 8.
The lunch menu has six
salads, seven cold sand- -
wiches, hot sandwiches,
eight fish and seafood
specials, four sirloins ...
and includes soup, chili
or salad, vegetable or
potato.
The lobster tank, always
indicative of a true seafood
house, is still there.
Back in 1976, Elmer The
Lobster ruled the tank .. .
Then came his son, Elmer II
. . . and after him was Her-
man . . . All were eventu-
ally eaten.
The first Elmer was
-served by an unsuspecting
waitress who didn't realize
he was "king" of the tank
. . . Elmer II just didn't have
leadership ability and be-

came a gulper'Sdelight.
Herman was a strong boss
but before he got too old, Joe
decided Herman would be
happier doing what he came
into the world for . . . to
make some diner drool .. .
And so Herman, too, is in
Lobster Heaven . . . where
all happy crawlers eventu-
ally go.
THEY SAY WHEN
Marilyn Smith gives a party
. . she GIVES a party! .. .
H
. er reputation enhanced it-
self with the latest outdoors
at Marilyn's home.
The weather cooperated
only to an extent that it
didn't rain . . . But the eve-
ning's coolness couldn't
take away from Marilyn's
warmth as a hostess.
So much food . . . gourmet
delights by David Pelleg-
rini, executive chef of Down
Under at Hart Plaza (silver
striped salmon with crab-
meat stuffing that took over
12 hours to prepare,
poached in white wine
boullion), quiches, pasta
salad, etc.
Marilyn is quite a cook,
too ... She prepared the
luscious flat tortes, pates,
roast chicken, etc.. .. Be-
verly Belt made her own
recipe cheesecake; Dar-
lene Larsen, the taboulee;
and Marge Copeland,
salads ... Also assistant
from Nimrod and Varda
Rosenthal.
What started out as -a
small intimate party be-
came a nowhere-to-mOve
funster . . . One clown
greeted folks at the door .. .
others had them play games
and blow bubbles . . . there
was valet parking . . . plus
disco and regular music for
folks to dance on an outdoor
raised platform.
Marj Jackson Levin of
the Free Press came wear-
ing a tuxedo . . . Leo Fein,
Down Under boss, had on
his new three-week-old
beard . . . Leah Baum was
taking strawberries off her
white angora blouse .. .
Rhoda Weiss looked good in
her Rhodika cosmetics. '
Former weatherwoman
Betty Bahr is still as pretty
and charming as ever .. .
Shoshana, born in Israel,
and nine-language songs-
ter, to open again at Gino's
Surf on Jefferson, Dec. 14.
It was a fun affair . . . and
everybody had a good time
. . . and appreciated the very
fine party-giving ability of
Marilyn.
WHEN HAROLD HOM
moved his King Lim's Gar-
dens from Nine Mile in Oak
Park to Lincoln Center on
Greenfield in Oak Park,
September 1980, he went
from 120 to 180 seating .. .
from tight parking to all the
parking people want.
Harold completely gutted
the former Big Boy interior
and rebuilt it . . . Where
there wasn't a carpet before,
there is one now . . . with
booths and tables : .. The
transition made an ugly
duckling into a beautiful
place with chandeliers over
