PLO Evacuation Concludes; Israelis Down Syrian MiG

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
evacuation of PLO ter-
rorists and Syrian soldiers
from West Beirut ended
Wednesday with the depar-
ture by sea of the last group
of 800 PLO members. They
were accompanied by a
number of women and chil-
dren.
Israeli officials have ex-
pressed concern that the
PLO have handed over
much of their heavy equip-
ment to their associated
left-wing Moslem groups
who have vowed to continue
fighting Israel.
Israeli afternoon news-
papers reported Wednesday
that left-wing guerrillas in
West Beirut are still hold-
ing two employees of Israel
Radio who drove by mistake

into the area earlier this
week.
Sarah Barkai, a re-
porter for the Israel
Radio's French-language
service, was freed Tues-
day as she was holding a
French passport, but the
driver and a sound tech-
nician are still being held,
while Israel is making ef-
forts through the interna-
tional force to have them
released.
The incident had not been
publicized until Wednes-
day.
According to an unofficial
count, just under 14,000
PLO fighters and Syrian
soldiers (excluding women
and children) have
evacuated West Beirut dur-
ing the past 10 days. They
included 7,728 PLO guerril-
las 2,651 members of the
pro-Syrian Palestine Liber-
ation Army (PLA) and 3,598
Syrian soldiers.

Meanwhile, a Syrian
MiG-25 aircraft was shot
down by an Israli plane
some six miles east of Beirut
Tuesday. An army spokes-
man said the Israeli plane
returned safely to its base.
One of the two Syrian
pilots was reportedly kil-

led in the air fight, while
the other pilot was said
by Israel Radio to have
been captured.
The aircraft was on a
photographic reconnais-
sance mission when the air
battle took place. Israeli of-
ficials declined to say why
the plane was downed.
The MiG-25 plane shot
down Tuesday, code-named
Foxbat in NATO, is said to
be the fastest and highest-
flying plane in operation in
the world today. It flies at
three times the speed of
sound and has a ceiling of
80,000 feet, higher than the
70,000 feet ceiling of its
closest Western rival, the
U.S.-made F-15 which is
also in service with the Is-
rael Air Force.
But Air Force experts
point out that the lower ceil-
ing and slower speed of the
American-made aircraft
can be made up by sophisti-
cated missiles. The MiG-25
plane carries two pilots.
Meanwhile, the last of
the Syrian troops in west
Beirut left by road Tues-
day, in a convoy of hun-
dreds of vehicles carry-
ing over 1,500 Syrian
soldiers, including the
rest of the Syrian 85th
Armored Brigade.
In addition to the road
evacuation, two ships car-
ried 800 PLO terrorists to
North Yemen and another
600 PLO men to the port of
Tartus in northern Syria.
One problem which re-
mains to be solved is the fu-
ture and fate of Lebanese
left-wing terrorist groups
which have been handed
some of the PLO heavy
weapons and equipment, in
contravention of the evacu-
ation agreement under
which such equipment
should have been handed
over to the official Lebanese
army.
The Lebanese left-
wingers, who have cooper-
ated with the PLO and Sy-
rian forces in the past, have
threatened to carry on
armed struggle against Is-
raeli forces and rightwing
Lebanese elements.
Israel is insisting that
these terrorist fellow-
travellers must also be
expelled from Lebanon,
as their presence there
continues a threat to Is-
rael's security.
In a related development,
PLO chief Yasir Arafat left
Beirut Monday aboard the
Greek cruise ship Atlantis,
bound for Athens where he
is expected to meet Greek
leaders before going on to
Tunis.
Meanwhile, Maj. Saad
Haddad, commander of the
Christian militia, who
helped Israel keep its border
with southern Lebanon
clear of PLO terrorists for

Alfred Dreyfus, following
the false charges against
him that were inspired by
anti-Semitism, several
trials and years of impris-
onment on Devil's Island,
returned to the French mili-
tary and served France dur-
ing World War I. After the
war he retired as a lieuten-
ant colonel.

the past seven years, ex-
pressed concern that he will
now be abandoned by both
Israel and Lebanese
President Bashir Gemayel.
In an interview with Is-
rael Radio, Haddad said
that since the war began in
Lebanon June 6 he had met
only once with Israel Chief
of Staff Rafael Eitan and no
Israeli political leader
sought to meet or consult
with him, unlike before the
fighting started when he
was always called upon by
Israeli leaders.
Haddad said he had
wanted to assist Israel in its
advance through southern
Lebanon, and had even been
allowed to move his tanks
and armed soliders forward
with the Israelis, but his
forces were halted at
Damour, south of Beirut,
apparently at the request of
Phalangist leader Gemayel.
