Georg Friedrich Nicolai
(1874-1964) was a famous
German scientist and con-
stant critic of the German
government. He fled the
country after denouncing
German involvement in
World War I and launched a
second career in South
America. His colleagues in-
cluded Albert Einstein and
Ivan Pavlov.
The German edition of his
biography was named one of
the 10 best non-fiction
books published in the
country last year. An
English-language edition,
"The Nicolai Case," by Wolf
Zuelzer, has been published
by Wayne State University
Press.The immense Nicolai
volume traces the anti-
Semitic trends in Germany.

in the latter years of the
19th Century, when it was
labeled "the signature of the
times"; the prejudices that
followed World War I and
the eventual hate regis-
tered in the tragic years of
Nazism.
In the early 1920s, in
the final years of the
Weimar Republic, there
is the emphasis on the be-
lief that Hitler's prop-
aganda could not suc-
ceed. The biography
states: "A few of Nicolai's
former associates at the
Weltbuehne had per-
suaded themselves that it
would be best to let Hitler
take power, for he could
not posSibly last very
long. Once he was gone
from the political scene,
they argued, Germany
could regain her political
health."
That's how the Nicolai
generation was fooled into
indifference to the emerg-
ing danger.
A very important
psychological viewpoint,
pointing to Nicolai's pro-
posal on the treatment to be
accorded Hitler, is con-
tained in this excerpt from
"The Nicolai Case":
"The Second World War
ran its course, avidly fol-
lowed by Nicolai. Once the
United States entered it, his
apprehensions diminished,
for he believed that now,
like the previous one, this
would be a war of resources.
He again pondered the
question of what was to be
done with the Germans
after their defeat. It was
imperative that the Nazi
mentality be studied if a re-
currence of the Hitlerian
madness was to be averted.
Fascism, he had declared in
1939, was one of the most
interesting phenomena of
modern times. It repre-
sented the resurgence of
animal instincts and fetish-
ist, totemistic, and other
atavistic attitudes in an
industrial society. It was
most regrettable that the
Fascist states had not
allowed scientists to study
the beast in its natural
habitat.
"Now, with victory in
sight, the opportunity
was at hand. The prime
object would be Hitler
himself, if taken alive.
Nicolai wrote a letter to
Winston Churchill to
suggest Hitler's examina-
tion and 're-education' by
trained psychologists
and other experts 'whose
political understanding
is far better than mine.'
The Moscow 'show trials'
of 1936 had shown the ef- -
fectiveness of such man-
ipulations, he added.
"Clearly, what Nicolai

had in mind was what
would later be called
`brain-washing.' He consid-
ered it justified in the case of
so important a prisoner as
Hitler, for he saw the phe-
nomenon of Nazism as a col-
lective mental aberration
that required a psychologi-
cal approach, and in any
case one had to fight fire
with fire."
"The Nicolai Case" is an
impressive biographical
study about one of the most
eminent personalities of the
century, coupled with the
most noteworthy historical
experiences in his lifetime .
