THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

In the Still of the Night

By DR. MAURICE CROLL

Upon this morn, I awoke,
To write a poem
From out of my heart.
A poem I so quickly built
Withing the early morn
of all my dreams.

(

And here I sit, alone, forlorn,
No words will come to me.
No matter how I try
to set my mind
In its allotted way.

Where are my words
That came to me
so willingly,
so brilliantly,
From yester night?

The early morns
Were good for me.
I waxed so eloquent
In the darkness
Of the silent night.

And, yet, when I would
scribe my way,
My words I knew so well
A few short hours ago,
I have not a single line
to show for my time
That I have put into rhythm,
that all the world
should know
the thoughts that arise
in me.

The words that came to me
so quickly in the night
When dreams would
traverse me,
I cannot find
No matter how I would
pursue.

Where have they gone?
these facile wordings,
In their fruitful joy
That will not come to me
no matter hoiv
I try.

We are not meant to know
all the mysteries
and all the joys
That come our way
and cover us
Like a "Tallis" in our
prayers,
To give us measured com-
forts
in the days of our life.

And though I rise this
early morn
To set upon this parchment
my very own words
That came to me
In thunderous course
in the still of the night,
I know not one.
No matter how I try
To recapture them.
I am forlorn, and so are they.

Lord, give me strength
to sift my thoughts
That I humbly possess
beacuse of You.

Oh Lord, I beseech Thee,
Please guide me well.

JWVA Campaign
to Aid Hospital

WASHINGTON —8 The
National Ladies Auxiliary
Jewish War Veterans of the
United States (JWVA) has
launched-a major appeal for
funds for the Chaim Sheba
Medical Center in Tel
Hashomer, Israel.
The medical center is
treating civilians and
soldiers wounded in Leba-
non.

The thoughts that arise
in me
From the very first day
That You gave me life.
That I may go my way,
To blend my pathways
into one
Toward You, the Almighty,
and walk the path
With my beloved ancestors
although I knew them_
not
as I would surely
want- to know.

They walked with You,
to You,
In your measured
guiding path,
Toward the righteousness
that You taught.
So, now I pray these words
since first I read
Before the sacred Torah
at Bar Mitzva (13 years)
in Your presence.

Please grant me further
guidance,
That all my paths

may then converge
And lead, so graciously,
Unto Your holy lair.

For this, I do insert
my body
and my soul,
That they, in reverence,
May then in sum total
come unto
You.
For this I do in earnest
I do pray.

P.S. Every writer has
gone through these
"soul-trying" periods,
when no words will come
and you continue to stare
at the blank paper which
stares right back at you.
When I finally did get
started, I reverted back
to the days when my reli-
gion was so strong within
me. I find_ today, in my
elder days, it is still very
strong and I draw great
soul-satisfying comfort
from it.
