the Russian satellite South
Yemen. In its mopping up
the Israeli army has cap-
tured several hundred
terrorists-in-training from
the Italian Red Brigades,
the Baader-Meinhof gangs
of West Germany, etc.
The universal position of
the Lebanese of all parties,
except for a few mer-
cenaries, is simply this: get
the PLO out! Let the Sy-W
rians leave! And only then
let the Israelis get out too.
The academics and
churchmen whO have
signed public appeals for
Israeli - withdrawal first
are simply lending their
names to the campaign of
the PLO and their Com-
munist supporters to sal-
vage by diplomacy what
they lost in military de-
feat.
In the civil war in Leba-
non, nearly 100,000 civi-
lians were killed and
350,000 rendered homeless.
The media, having failed to
tell that story at the time, is
now ascribing to Israel's
police action in Lebanon's
poit-civil war jungle many
of the damages that oc-
curred years ago. Anyone
who has been there can
identify the destruction
scenes, when and how they
occurred.
Those who see what is
going on in the American
media, both Israelis and
Americans, ask themselves
in every conversation why
such a vicious job is being
done on Israel. They an-
swers are several, but three
stand out:
The ethics of the media
have not improved one whit
since the days of that tech-
nical genius, Josef Goeb-
bels: anything goes, so long
as it is sensational and sale-
able.
The endemic anti-
Semitism of "Christian"
peoples, always just
below the surface, has
again a welcome target in
the extraordinarily effi-
cient and competent Is-
rael Defense Force ac-
tions.
The Communist penetra-
tion of the media, about
which no one has been able
to talk since Joe McCarthy
gave the Communists the
best "cover" they ever have
had in America, is clearly -in
evidenee.
The Israeli action "Peace
for Galilee" has shattered
the PLO militarily and the
Soviets have been set back
severely in their push into
the Mediterranean.
Once again the Free.
World has a superb chance
for stopping aggression and
inhibiting terrorism. The
Soviets and their fellow-
travelers are doing every-
thing they can, through
every channel in diplomacy
and every fifth column in
America and Western
Europe, to turn the Israeli
victory into defeat and to
bring Arafat and his killers
back into center stage. • '

But that didn't satisfy the
media, seeking sen--
sationalism. They. lied
through their teeth in re-
porting destruction, loss of
lives and numbers of home-
less.
I have been in Lebanon,
including east and north of
Beirut, and have seen with
my own eyes what lies have
been widely told. The figure
of 600,000 homeless was
given for an area whose
total population was — be-
fore 100,000 fled from the
PLO — 310,000! "Total de-
Struction" was a term
applied to towns and cities
where damage has been
minimal, where women and
children walk the streets,
where expensive silverware
and fine dresses are dis-
played behind plate glass
windows, where gasoline
can be purchased at the
pumps- (for 50 cents a gal-
lon!).
Whirhas the media — the
big TV networks, the Wash-
ington Post, Reuters and AP
— misrepresented the situ-
ation so badly and so boldly?
Why have they suppressed
important facts, failed to
cover important dimensions
of the story, and simply lied
wholesale about other . as-
pects?
The important facts about
the Lebanon, so far as re-
cent Israeli intervention is
concerned, are these:
First, "Lebanon"
ceased to exist as a politi-
cal entity after the Syrian
invasion and the 1975-76
civil war. There has been
no central government,
not even car licenses and
drivers' licenses. Politi-
cal control, military force
— everything pertaining
to government — have
been in • the hands of
competing private ar-
mies, warlords and oc-
cupying fOices.
The PLO invasion: of
autumn 1970, after they
failed to kill King 'Hussein
of Jordan and were driven
out, de-stabilized Lebanon.
The Syrian invasion, which
staked out 60 percent of the
countryside, ended even
minimum functions of a na-
tional government.
Second, PLO terrorists
took over part of the shat-
tered country and ran their
own "state within a state."
From this haven they
struck at Israeli farms and
villages. In this haven they
