Yad Vashem Cites Czechs

JERUSALEM — A tree-
planting ceremony at Yad
Vashem recently honored
Jan and Anna Tkadlecek
and their son, Bohumil, who
provided shelter from the
Nazis in 1945 for Erich
Kulka, now a well-known
Jerusalem author, and his
son Otto.
In January 1945, Kulka
and his son jumped off a
train bound for the
Auschwitz-Birkenau death
camp, and appealed to the
Tkadlecek family for help.

At great risk to themselves,
they hid the escapees in a
timbershed until the end of
the war.
Jan Tkadlecek and his
family had, over a
number of years, been
invited by Yad Vashem to
Israel to be honored, but
were refused permission
by the Czech authorities
to leave.
According to information
from the London-based In-
ternational Council of Jews
from Czechoslovakia, some
400 cases of Czech and at
least an - equal number of
Slovak gentiles who came to
the rescue of Jews in Nazi-
occupied Czechoslovakia
have been established by
Yad Vashem. Authorities in
Czechoslovakia persis-
tently refuse permission for
them to travel to Israel.
