CARL LEVIN

SANDER LEVIN

If elected to the U.S.
House of Representatives,
Sander Levin would be,
with his brother Carl, the
25th in a series of brothers
serving simultaneously in
the U.S. Congress.
In three of the previous 24
such instances, there were
three brothers serving in
Congress at the same time:
Samuel, Thomas and Wil-
liam Fessenden, all of
Maine; James Findlay of
Ohio and John and William
Findlay of Pennsylvania;
and James, John and
Richard Johnson, all of
Kentucky.

The other sets of
brothers were from
Alabama, Virginia, North
Carolina, Tennessee,
Missouri, Texas, Ok-
lahoma, Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, Oregon,
New York, Connecticut,
Florida, Maryland, Ver-
mont, Illinois and South
Dakota.
such
earliest
The
brotherly political triumphs
were: Dwight Foster of
Massachusetts, who served
in the House from 1793 to
1800, and Theodore Foster
of Rhode Island, who served
in the Senate from 1790 to
1803; and John Nicholas of
Virginia, who served in the
House from 1793 to 1801,
and Wilson Nicholas, also of
Virginia, who served in the
Senate from 1799 to 1804.

Against Hate

NEW YORK — A booklet
aimed at helping schools,
communities, and commu-
nity organizations deal with
anti-Semitic outbreaks has
been published by the
American Jewish Commit-
tee.
Titled "Anti-Semitic In-
cidents in the Community
. . . Coping with Eruptions
. . . Preventing Future Out-
breaks," the booklet fea-
tures case histories describ-
ing educational programs
set up by communities that
had been confronted with
anti-Semitic vandalism, Ku
Klux Klan activities, and
other manifestations of
bigotry.
The 34-page booklet also
contains a set of guidelines
for coping with anti-Semitic
incidents in the community,
and a selected bibliography
of books, pamphlets,
memoranda, and magazine
articles on various aspects
of anti-Semitism.
The booklet is available
for a moderate charge from

PLO-UN Pact?

JERUSALEM (JNI) — A
Norwegian newspaper,
Wartland, says Israeli
soldiers found a secret
United Nations document
in Lebanon which permit-
ted the Palestine Liberation
Organization to establish
bases and store arms in
areas controlled by the
United Nations Interim
Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
The paper claims the
document was signed in
1978 by PLO chief Yasir
Arafat and UN Secretary
General Kurt Waldheim,
and the document prohib-
ited the UN from photo-
graphing the PLO bases.
