hey were driven from the
Punjabi region of their
native India over a thousand years
ago by Arab invaders. In all the lands
where they sought refuge they were
rejected and discriminated against as
darkskinned aliens. They were
driven by necessity into a nomadic
life as itinerant tradesmen.
They were among the first to be
rounded up and imprisoned by Hitler
in his manic and demonic compul-
sion to rid the world of those he con-
sidered to be "inferior" to the "pure
Aryan race". Probably as many as
half a million died in the Nazi gas
chambers and death camps. Precise
figures are impossible to come by
since these people have not been able
to create the kinds of documentation
centers which have detailed the
destruction of the 6,000.000 Jewish
victims.
They are the gypsies, or Roma as
they prefer to be called. The World
Romany Congress, headquartered in
Belgrade, Yugoslavia, estimates their
current number world-wide at 10
million. Four million live in Eastern
Europe and two million in the West.

only the second country to do so. The
other is the Soviet *Union. This new
status gives them the right to conduct

therefore, is high on their list of
priorities. Most European countries
permit these nomads. to stop
anywhere fbr only a few days at a
time before they are forced to move
on. This makes it impossible for the
children to attend schobl on a regular
basis.
What the gypsies want, according
to Puxon, is "employment, schooling
for the children and citizenship for
the stateless.''
He also feels that some reparations
are due from the time of the
holocaust. Simon Weisenthal, the
noted Nazi-hunter, agrees. He has
stated that while the story of the
Roma has not been as well known as
that of the Jews, their loss of half a
million persons shOuld be compen-
sated proportionately to that paid for
the extermination of the Six Million.
