Editor, The Jewish News:
Two of our local day
schools are facing severe fi-
nancial difficulties. The
closing of these schools
would be a shameful dis-
grace to our community.
The generally younger
and highly-committed par-
ents of day school students
are overtaxed and overbur-
dened by the increasing cost
of tuition, and the very care
of true Torah education is
being threatened.
The students of the day
school movement in Detroit
are developing unparalleled
commitments to Israel, to
our heritage and to the De-
troit Jewish community. A
dollar investment in these
fine young people now will
do more for the future of our
community than any other
investment could possibly
equal. Therefore, the com-
munity looks to the Jewish
Welfare Federation to pro-
vide special assistance in
times of emergencies such
as those facing the day
schools today.
The system of allocation
based on outdated priority
preferences is in dire need of
change and upon examina-
tion df the past allocation
priorities of Federation, one
finds the day school allot-
ment woefully short. Actual
need must now be the
criteria. We can no longer
afford to have our day
schools treated as the step-
children of Jewish educa-
tion in our community. •
Plaza Named for

JERUSALEM — "We are
proud and honored that the
First Lady has been chosen
to receive an honor that re-
flects on all Americans
everywhere: to have a plaza
named after her on the He-
brew University's Mount
Scopus campus." This was
stated last week by Mrs.
Sally Lewis, wife of U.S.
dedication of the Nancy Re-
agan Plaza at the univer-
sity.
Among those who
attended the ceremony were
nearly 100 members of a
"caravan" from the West
Coast Region of the Ameri-
can Friends of the Hebrew
University, led by Hol-
lywood entertainers Steve
Lawrence and Eydie
Gorme, television star Jan
Murray, and fasion trend-
setter Vidal Sassoon.

Beirut Still
Home for 30
Jewish Families
BEIRUT — Some 30
Jewish families still make
their home in western Be-
irut, according to the
Chicago Tribune.
They live alongside the
Lebanese civilians and PLO
terrorists who have been
encircled by Israeli troops
since last month.
"To survive, you have to
be friends with everyone,"
according to Leila Shamm
Daoud Srour, one of the ci-
ty's Jewish residents.
