Former U of M Hillel Director
Sees Drop in Jewish Enrollment

The decline in the Jewish
birthrate and the continu-
ing increase in the cost of a
college education will bring
a significant drop in Jewish
enrollment in colleges and
universities during the rest
of this century, according to
Rabbi William Rudolph, di-
rector of personnel services
for Bnai Brith Hillel Foun-
dations and a former direc-
tor of the Hillel at the Uni-
versity of Michigan.
Rabbi Rudolph, at a meet-
ing of the Hillel Commis-
sion in Washington, D.C.,
also predicted that the
emerging enrollment pat-
tern will resemble that of
pre-World War II and the
immediate postwar period,

can Jews as well as end-
ing of various financial
aid programs of the gov-
ernment.
He predicted that the top

when large numbers of
Jewish students attended
urban schools while living
at home.
Rabbi Rudolph believes
prosperity and population
growth have faded and are
not likely to return soon. He
said this meant not only
fewer students but the
choice of college by those
who do attend will be differ-
ent from that of the previous
decade.

schools will suffer very little
but that weaker schools
may disappear. "The elite
private schools will be ac-
cessible increasingly only to
the rich and the poor," he
said, while the rest of the
prospective students "will
gravitate more and more to
public institutions and —
because of tuition differen-
tials for out-of-state stu-
dents — they will remain
close to home, many living
at home."

He predicted that from
a peak of a total of 7.3 mil-
lion students in 1981,
there will be a drop of 15
percent to 6.2 million by
1990 and that the decline
for Jews may be by an
even bigger percentage,
primarily because of
low birthrate of Ameri-

week as a maintenance
mechanic at Sealy Eastern,
Ltd. After his dismissal in
February 1981, he sup-
ported his wife and infant
daughter with unemploy-
ment insurance and per-
sonal borrowings until he
found another job, recently.

33 Great Specialty Shops always open Wed. and Fri. til 9 p. m.

He said the complaint
he brought against Sealy
"was for principle. A
company will think first
before they try this
again," he said, adding
"It's not just the Jewish
religion, it's any reli-
gion."

Rand said he might sue
his former employer for un-
just diSmissal to recover the
$18,000 he lost in wages
during his period of unem-
ployment.
In what was termed a
precedent-setting decision,
the referee, Osgoode Hall
Law Prof. Peter Cumming,
ruled the company dis-
criminated against Rand by
trying to force him to work
on the Jewish Sabbath.
Rand had informed Sealy
officials when hired that he
would not work on the Sab-
bath. He worked seven
weeks before he was ordered
to work on the holiday, the
referee found.
Robert Reuter, the
Human Rights Commission
lawyer who argued on
Rand's behalf, called the de-
cision a landmark ruling
because it required em-
ployers to justify working
conditions which may in-
fringe on the rights of a
worker.

Israel's Image
Impeding Peace?

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Most Egyptians still see Is-

rael as an imperialist re-
gime insensitive to the
rights of other people, ac-
cording to Israeli Prof. Shi-
mon Shamir.
Prof. Shamir, who re-
cently returned from a visit
to Egypt, believes many
Egyptians would like to see
the peace process move for-
ward but claims they also
feel that Israel's image
stands in the way of peace.
