In their tributes to Mayor
Young, both brought greet-
ings from the cause they re-
present and pointed out that
11,000 students from 109
countries were graduated
from the Afro - Asian Insti-
tute in the last 25 years.
Jacobson said many noted
leaders emerged from the
ranks of these graduates,
several having risen to
prime ministerships in
their native lands.
The most descriptive
evaluation of the institute's
aims and achievements was
given by Morris Lieberman,
chairman of the Metropoli-
tan Detroit Histadrut Cam-
paign. Lieberman pre-
sented Mayor Young with
an inscribed Israel menora
as an appreciation of his
interest in the movement.
He paid honor to Mayor
Young and he defined the
aims of the Afro - Asian In-
stitute:
"An interesting, vital
outgrowth of Histadrut's
activity is its technical
aid program to the un-
derdeveloped nations of
Africa, Asia and Latin
America. Israel has
trained and is training
thousands of young men
and women from the new
lands of Africa, Asia and
other global areas.
"Histadrut has - sent hun-
dreds of experts to these un-
derdeveloped regions to aid
the health, education and
economic welfare of these
underdeveloped lands. This
is the task of its Afro - Asian
Institute, whose endow-
ment fund benefits from
this dinner."
MKs Ignoring
Soviet Olim?
JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
In one of the shortest Knes-
set speeches on record,
Rabbi Menahem Hacohen
recently complained about
government indifference
concerning Soviet emigra-
tion to Israel.
Hacohen, in a 90-second
speech during a sparsely
attended Knesset debate on
aliya, concluded "If there
are no olim, maybe it's be-
cause we don't want them."
