10, Almost 30 years old, the
Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavne
was founded south of Re-
hovot, near the site where
the original Yeshiva of
Yavne .stood almost 2,000
years ago. It began with
seven students and today
counts more than 350 on its
rolls. The Kollel, a post-
graduate program, has 30
young men enrolled for
study.
RABBI GOLDVICHT

rangement, whereby stu-

Inter denominational Acclaim
for Hertz on His Retirement
With the sanctuary of
Temple Beth El filled to
capacity at the special Sab-
bath Eve service marking
the retirement of Rabbi
Richard C. Hertz, inter-
denominational, state and
national honors were ac-
corded him.
Led by a message from
President. Ronald Reagan
and his wife Nancy, there
were scores of messages
from all parts of the coun-
try, from state and national
personalities, Jewish and
Israeli leaders.

service last Friday eve-
ning, Governor William
Milliken was represented
by Lieutenant Governor
James Brickley, who
presented Rabbi Hertz
with a gubernatorial cita-
tion.

former Catholic archbishop
of Detroit, praised Rabbi
Hertz for his efforts to im-
prove understanding be-
tween Christians and Jews.
Other participants in the
ceremonies honoring Rabbi
Hertz included Max Fisher,
toastmaster Marvin
Goldman, Rabbi David
Hachen representing the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations, and Beth El

The principal address of
the evening was delivered
by Leonard N. Simons, who
was president of Temple
Beth El when Rabbi Hertz
assumed the congregation's
pUlpit.
Simons gave an elabo-
rate account of the
achievements credited to
Dr. Hertz during his 30-
year Beth El ministry. His
15-minute address was
an historical record of
Beth El as well as of the
community in which it
plays a leadership role.
Replete with humor, Si-
mons' address paid honor to
Rabbi Hertz for services to
Jewry, Detroit and Michi-
gan, the nation and Israel,
in every aspect of human
and civil rights causes.
Simons' address evoked
so much enthusiasm that it
generated the only applause
of the evening on a rare oc-
casion when applauding
emerges during a religious
service in a synagogue.
