day before I had watched a
documentary film on the
state-owned Austrian Tele-
vision.
The documentary re-
ferred to Joseph Haydn, the
great classic composer,
whose 250th birthday is
being celebrated through-
out the world. On the screen
were two old Jewish
cemeteries and a
synagogue. They were
among the tourist attrac-
tions of the city, where
Haydn spent most of his life.
I travelled to Eisenstadt,
where I met local Jewish
leader Oskar Schiller.
Eisenstadt was the center of
all the surrounding Jewish
communities before World
War II. Presently, it has
only seven Jews.

The city council sup-
ports the maintenance of
the 300-year-old
cemeteries and the
synagogue. In the middle
of one cemetery there is a
special grave sur-
rounded by a fence. It is
the resting palce of Mara
Asch, who was an out-
standing leader in Or-
thodox Judaism.

On one wall of the former
ghetto can be seen the
"Sabbath-chain" that
blocked the traffic on Sab-
baths and Jewish holidays.

courtyard are renovated
now, because Eisenstadt
expects many foreign
tourists for special Haydn
celebrations.
On June 9, a Jewish
museum will be opened,
where pictures, books,
documents and other
memorabilia will prove that
the Jews in Austria were
mentioned as foreign trad-
ers in the 10th Century.
Dr. Fred Sinowatz, the
Austrian vice-chancellor
and Minister of Education,
has granted more than
$500,000 for the museum's
interior walls.

O f f

Dr. Sinowatz and Dr.
Kurt Schubert, professor
of Judaic studies at the
University of Vienna,
