Polish historian Tadeusz
Manteuffel's "The Forma-
tion of the Polish State: The
Period of Ducal Rule, 963-
1194" has been translatdd
by Andrew Gorski and pub-
lished by Wayne State Uni-
versity Press.
The book describes the
organization of early Piast
(Poland), the Slavic tribal
unification and resistance
to German territorial ex-
pansion during this first
period of recorded Polish
history.
Manteuffel examines Po-
land in the context of the
emergent state system in
east central Europe and in-
terprets the consequences of
the transitory alliances and
frequent conflicts among
Bohemia, Hungary, Russia
and Poland. His narrative
ends with the death of
Kazimierz Sprawiedliwy in
1194 and the legitimization
of a fragmented and par-
titioned Poland.
Andrew Gorski, an in-
structor in Polish for the
Orchard Lake School Dis-
trict, is the author of a study
on Baudelaire and Dos-
toevsky and has written
several articles for the De-
troit News.
