Egypt Envoy Sees Mediator Role in M.E. Peace Process

BONN (JTA) — The
Egyptian Ambassador to
West Germany, Aisha
Rateb, has suggested that
her country serve as a
mediator between Israel
and the Arab states of the
"rejection front" to convince
them to join the Middle East
peace process and contrib-
ute to it.
She maintained, how-
ever, that Egypt has only a
limited role to play with re-
spect to Palestinian au-
tonomy, according to an
interview published in Die
Welt.
Without the participation

of all Arab countries, it is
impossible to reach a per-
manent peace in the region,
the envoy said.
She said Israel's
evacuation of Sinai pro-
ved its commitment to its
treaty with Egypt. It
shows the other Arab
countries that one can
rely on Jerusalem and
"We hope that this will
serve as a major incen-

peace process," she said.

right nor the desire to rep-
resent the Palestinians in

Jewish 1st Lady
for Costa Rica

MEXICO CITY — With
the scheduled inauguration
of Dr. Luis Alberto Monge to
the presidency of Costa Rica
on May 8, a Latin American
republic will have a Jewish
first lady for the first time in
history, according to a re-
port by the American
Jewish Committee's Mexico
and Central America office.
Doris Yankelewitz Be-
rger de Monge was born in
San Jose, Costa Rica's capi-
tal city. Her family is part of
the small Costa Rican
Jewish community, which,
with almost 2,500 members,
has been an integral part of
this democratic country
since the first arrival of
Jews in the 1920s.
Dr. Monge, a lawyer, was
the first Ambassador of
Costa Rica to Israel in 1962.

mining their future and
their own nationhood. If an
agreement is reached, she
added, it would be the task
of the Palestinians and of
Jordan to implement it.
