Danny Raskin's

The Best of Everything

A TOUCH OF CLASS
could very well describe
Don Cook . . . appearing
Mondays through Satur-
days, 8 to 1, at Red Cedars,
Telegraph and Nine Mile
. . . since December- .. .
Diners stop to look and lis-
ten with much pleasantry
as Don weaves his nimble
fingers on the electric piano,
organ and strings double
keyboard and bass fiddle
computerized side man .. .
in a delightful selection of
songs that also promote his
soft, poised voice.
There's much profes-
sionalism in Don . . . much
experienced presentation
. . . whether it's for listening
or close dancing . . . rambl-
ing easily with oldie-
goodies like, "For Once In
My Life," "Route 66,"
"Smile," "Slow Boat To
China," "I'll Never Stop
Loving You," "Day By Day,"
"What I Did For Love,"
"Hello Young Lovers,"
"Guess Who 'I Saw Today,"
"Send In the Clowns,"
"Angel Eyes," "I Wanna Be
Around" (to pick up the
pieces), songs from
"Cabaret," etc., etc. .. .
mood music that seems to fit
the splendid atmosphere of
Red Cedars with its 120 sea-
ting in red and white
colorings, brown woods and
dimmly-lit standing lan-
terns.
I had a delicious piece
of white fish ... and that
wonderful creamy tartar
sauce made on the Red
Cedars premises ... Emil
Tintea, who was at the
original Scotch 'n Sirloin
18 years, has been behind
the bar over four years at
Red Cedars ... plying his
trade with grace, know-
how and the congeniality
that has made him a favo-
rite for so many years.
Don Cook is in good com-
pany with owners Lenore
and Jack Freed . . . Lenore's
dad and Jack's partner, Ray
Bresler, who passed away in
December, would have
loved Don's low key type of
style . . . working easily
with both his hands and
heart.
He fulfills a very enjoy-
able evening at Red Cedars.
TO SUPPRESS what-
ever confusion may be pre-
sent among readers, there is
absolutely no connection
between Dimitri's of South-
field on Southfield and 10
Mile . . . and Dimitri's
Niko's on Woodward near
11 Mile.
The Southfield spot is
owned by Dimitri Syros,
and primarily for Greek
dining with some American
dishes (more to be added in
the near future) . . . plus
liquor and wines . . . On
Woodward, it is a family
restaurant owned by
brothers Nick and Gus
KarageorgoS . . . with com-
plete American food menu,
some Greek dishes . . . and
diet favorites.
REMY BERDY, execu-
tive chef at Michigan Inn,
has resigned his position .. .
and leaves after the "April
in Paris" epicurean delight

benefit ball, April 23 .. .
He'll move to the new
Sheraton - Oaks at 12-Oaks
in May . . . where Henrik
Jensen, former bossman at
Fisher's 666 is food and bev-
erage director . . . This is a
big coup for Henrik since
Israeli-born Remy is among
the finest executive chefs
around.
KOGY'S on Big Beaver
in Troy . . . is now being op-
erated by Fred Bean, part-
ner of the late Kogy
Aronsson.
LOCAL RESTAU-
RANTS will display their
virtuosity when "A Taste of
Detroit," the Michigan Res-
taurant Association's an-
nual fine foods festivity,
kicks off the ethnic festival
season at Hart Plaza
downtown April 30, noon to
11 p.m. . . . same time May 1
. . . and noon to 10 May 2.
This will be the fourth
yearly "Taste" festival .. .
and will feature 26 area res-
taurants serving sample-
sized portions of their house
specialties at prices ranging
from 25e to $2.25 . . . Mean-
while, a collection of
entertainers will perform in
the Hart Plaza amphi-
theater.
THE COUNTS, a five-
piece show/ dance band, will
be at Michigan Inn's De-
wey's for only a week .. .
Monday through April 24.
SEYMOUR POMISH,
Detroit Tennis Club
member with Billy Jacobs,
one of the family owners,
has his own table with
plaque in center that says
"Seymour's Table" . . . at
the new beautiful Buddy's
Pizza on Northwestern
Highway.
But it's a very small part
of the large 285-seating new
restaurant . . . encompass-
ing 8,000 square feet of
interior space . . . and 11/2
acres overall . . . plus 110
employees.
Buddy's on Northwestern
is now open for lunch .. .
with reservations accepted
. . . There are no reserva-
tions at dinner, but people
with large parties are
encouraged to call ahead.
"THE FOOD at Mario's
on Second is absolutely out-
standing," says Fred Raz-
nick of Vlasic Foods.
PREMIER CENTER,
Detroit's newest big name
night spot . . . on Van Dyke
. . . already has had the
likes of Lou Rawls, Tony
Bennett and Dionne War-
wick . . . with The Spinners
(April 28-29), Rich Little
(May 5-6), Suzanne Som-
mers (May 12-13) and Lola
Falana (June 1-3) . . . But
there's quite a deviation
this Sunday at 5 p.m. .. .
with Superkicks Profes
sional Kick Boxing.
TWO MEN AND two
women, to the original jazz
accompaniments, interpret
familiar and not-so-familiar
John Lennon and Paul
McCartney tunes in mask,
mime, dance, blacklight
and hat and cane vaudeville
. . . in "According to John/
Paul" original musical
