THE DETROIT,. JEWISH, NEWS

To Choose Life .. .

Who are the people of the Exodus?

•Ethiopia, in Syria, in parts of Latin America and wherever a
Jewish heart beats, our brothers and sisters seek to live as
Jews without fear. They, too, have made the choice, alone
but for us. •

What is it that has carried us through centuries of
wandering, centuries of oppression and then, when others
would have failed, summoned up our courage to confront
tyranny, to found a nation, to shelter the homeless and
feed the hungry?

Here in Detroit, where so many are in need of services
, — the aged, the infirm, the disadvantaged — yet another
choice was made: the choice as a Jewish community to
provide social and educational services to the best of our
ability despite inflation and recession.

We are a people with the courage to make choices.

At this season, as we prepare to re-enact the ancient
scenario of Passover, we are struck by many contemporary
parallels, challenges that require us to make choices out of
traditional concern and strength.

In each of these instances, we have chosen those
options that help ensure our people's survival. But to fulfill
those options takes the commitment of each of us.

In Israel, whose people know only too well the costs of
defense, they chose the financial burdens of peace. We
chose to help them.

Therefore, we, the Rabbis of Metropolitan Detroit, call
upon the members of our congregations and upon every
• Jew, to make his or her best contribution to the 1982 Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel Emergency Fund. To dO so — for
you, your family and your community — is to choose life.
