Historic Footnote on Italy
Editor, The Jewish News:
I read the portion of Jan
Morris' article on the, Vene-
tian Ghetto in your column
Purely Commentary Jan.
22 with great interest.
Although I fully agree
with your evaluation of it, I
must point out that the
statement ". . . the Jews of
Italy were guaranteed full
civic equality by King Vit-
torio Emanuele II in 1866
. . ." is misleading.
What the king did in 1866
was to extend to the then
just unified country a legal
status already enjoyed by
Jews in many of its parts,
including Victor
Emanuele's own kingdom of
Piedmont and Sardejna
(Sardinia).
One of our prized fam-
ily possessions is an old
print showing the Vene-
tian Assembly voting to
"resist the seige of the
Austrian army at all
cost." This was in 1849
and several readily-
identifiable Jewish
names appear on the list
of the supreme governing
body of the republic.
JO °
Among. them are Angelo
Levi, Giacomo Trebes and
Abramo Errera, my
mother's great-
grandfather. Even then
many Venetian Jews,
among them the Erreros,
did not live in the ghetto.
