The Knesset Is Criticized on Immunity Vote

TEL AVIV — Once it was
a great honor to be a Knes-
set member in Israel. In re-
cent years the Knesset has
lost its splendor and
prestige. Some Knesset
members have even been
brought before the courts
for committing serious
crimes.
Recently the Knesset
proved again that in-case of
personal interests there is a
consensus.
The chairman of the
Knesset Committee, Eitan
Livni of the Likud, proposed
lifting the immunity of six
Knesset members who have

committed traffic offenses:
Moshe Shahal, Yitzhak Ra-
bin, Geula Cohen, Roni
Milo, Charley Bitton and
Transport Minister Haim
Korfu. They had been tic-
keted for driving fast, ignor-
ing traffic signs and one of
them (Charley Bitton) even
injured a child.
Some of the six were pre- -
pared to pay traffic fines,
but according to the immun-
ity law all police charges
against Knesset members
are forwarded to the Knes-
set and to the judicial coun- _
selor of the government,
Prof. Yitzhak Zamir, who
decides if a Knesset member
has to waive his immunity.
Zamir proposed that the

Knesset waive immunity
and the six MKs agreed.
But it turned out that the
majority of the Knesset
members were of the opin-
ion that they should have
different rights from other
citizens of the country. In
the vote in the Knesset on
the proposal for waiver of
immunity for the six, only
61 deputies out of 120 took
part. Forty voted against,
18 voted for the proposal
and three abstained.
After the vote, many
Knesset members defined
the outcome as a shame.
The Israeli press con-
demned the vote, stating
that the Knesset members
care only for themselves

and diminish the prestige of
the Knesset in the eyes . of
the population. Even Minis-
ter for Transport Haim
Korfu condemned the vote
and announced he would in-
troduce a special law to an-
nul the vote.

Brandeis Award

WALTHAM, Mass. —
William Mazer, one of the
earliest supporters of Bran-
deis University and a lead-
ing philanthropist in Palm
Beach and New York City,
will • receive the Brandeis
University Jacob A.
Goldfarb Medal at a lunch-
eon at the Breakers Hotel
on Feb. 13.

SACRAMENTO (JTA) —
The Rules Committee of the
State Senate approved a
resolution "deploring" the
anti-Semitic remarks of
Sen. John Schmitz, an
ultra-conservative Republi-:
can, and "disassociating"
the upper chamber from
them.
Schmitz, who had de-
nounced Jews, homosexuals
and women for opposing a
constitutional amendment
that would ban abortions in
California, charged at the
committee hearing that the
Jewish community was
"terrorizing everybody."
The 3-2 committee vote
last week split along party
lines. But the two Republi-
can members who voted

against the censure said
they did not condone
Schmitz's behavior but
thought he had already
been punished enough.
The Rules Committee
earlier stripped Schmitz of
his chairmanship of the
Constitutional Amend-
ments Committee, removed
him as vice chairman of the
Industrial Relations Com-
mittee and as a member of
the advisory commission of
the Status of Women.

Deceivers are the most
dangerous members of
society. They trifle with the
best affections of our na-
ture, and violate the most
sacred obligations.
