Brother, Sister Holocaust Sunivors Are Reunited
LONDON (JTA) — A
middle-aged brother and
sister who last saw each
other when they were chil-
dren in the Auschwitz con-
centration camp and be-
lieved each other had been
murdered had an emotional
reunion in Newcastle-
upon-Tyne, northeast
England.
Harry Nagelsztain, 56,
was at Newcastle Airport
Sunday to greet his 58-
year-old sister Manya
Kornblit who flew in from
Oklahoma after hearing he
was still alive. Until a few
days ago, he, too, had
thought his sister was dead.
The couple, who were
born in Hrubieszow, Po-
land, were separated in Au-
schwitz in 1943, when

Harry was 15 and his sister
17.
After being released by
the Americans from an-
other camp, Harry settled in
Newcastle and became a
building contractor. He
married an English woman
and had two sons and two
daughters.
originally,
Manya,
Matel, emigrated after
the war to Oklahoma
with her sweetheart,
Meyer Kornblit, another
camp survivor. They, too,
married, raised a family
and prospered.
She only suspected her
brother might be still alive
a few days ago as a result of
research into the family his-
tory by her son, Mike. Last
month Manya met a cousin
in Israel who recalled that
he had heard from Harry
shortly after the war in a
letter which had mentioned
Newcastle.
She hunted through the
Newcastle telephone direc-
tory and found her brother's
name. A long-distance call
quickly confirmed that it
was her long-lost brother.
Harry's children were at
the airport to meet their
newly discovered relations.
Manya arrived with her
httsband, and their son
Mike and his wife.
At a reception at the air-
port hotel, Harry said, "I
recognized her as soon as I
saw her coming off the
plane. All my life I thought I
had no family. Now we have
40 years to catch up on."
AWACS Basis
of Gulf Defense
WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The defense ministers of the
six-nation Gulf Cooperation
Council — Saudi Arabia,
Kuwait, the United Arab
Emirates, Bahrain, Qatar
and Oman — have agreed to
a joint defense system based
on Saudi Arabia's AWACS
planes supplied by the
United States, according to
Kuwaiti press reports.
The reports also said that
the six Arab ministers, who
met last week in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, also adopted
resolutions calling for es-
tablishing a joint rapid de-
ployment force, setting up a-
council arms-making in-
dustry to replace one
founded by Egypt, and coor-
dinating military purchases
by member states.
Woman to Head
New York UJA
NEW YORK (JTA) —
Elaine Winik has been
elected president of the
United Jewish Appeal of
Greater New York, the first
woman to hold the position
since the philanthropic
organization was founded in
the grim days of Nazi perse-
cution in 1938.
Mrs. Winik becomes the
second woman to take over a
top leadership post in New
York Jewish philanthropy.
In July 1980, Mrs. Laurence
Tisch was named president
of Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies, beneficiary
of the UJA-Federation
organization.
Egged Bus Strike Probed
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Attorney General Yitzhak
Shamir has ordered an im-
mediate investigation of the
Egged bus cooperative
management's strike
against the gpvernment.
The bus co-op, which has
a virtual monopoly of serv-
ice all over Israel, halted
bus service in Jerusalem
about 7 p.m. Monday night.
Haim Corfu said if there
was a bus strike, his minis-
try would operate the buses
under an emergency public
transportation plan.
Meanwhile, the attorney
general intends to press
legal charges against the
Egged management and
executives for violation of
the terms of their franchise.
It acted to ,force the gov-
ernment to hand over funds
for buses purchased a year
ago which Egged says the
government promised to
pay for. The government re-
sponded by stopping all sub-
sidies to Egged until it had a
written pledge from the
management not to halt
service again.
