Study Shows Soviet Jewish Intermarriage Rate at 50 Pct.
LONDON (JTA) — Ac-
cording to a World Jewish
Congress study, nearly one
of every two marriages
among the Jewish popula-
tion in the Soviet Union in-
volved a non-Jewish part-
ner.
This finding is contained
in a report released by the
research arm of the WJC,
the Institute of Jewish Af-
fairs. The study, based on of-
ficial Soviet statistics from
the 1960s until the mid-
1970s, examined marrage
patterns in four Soviet re-
publics and three cities.

The data suggests a
greater tendency among
Jews to marry within their
own ethnic group than was
the case among the national
minorities in the Soviet
Union.
The WJC study also finds

Jewish males to "marry
out- is much higher than
among Jewish females.
The incidence of mar-
riages between persons be-
longing to different
nationalities is quite corn-
mon in the Soviet Union,
the statistics revel. In the
case of Jews these instances
have added significance
since, as the report notes,
"the overwhelming major-
ity of the children of mixed
unions do not identify
themselves as Jews when
applying for their identity
documents and do not, in
their majority consider
themselves as part of the
Jewish people."

CPR Manikin
Given to City
Although he lost in his
bid for a seat on the Oak
Park City Council last No-
vember, William Freedman
has kept one of his cam-
paign promises and, at the
same time, shown his
appreciation for the city's
public safety department.
Freedman, who suffered a
heart attack last Sept. 20,
has donated a special mani-
kin to the city that will be
used to train public safety
officers and residents in the
techniques of cardiopulmo-
nary resuscitation (CPR).
Freedman credited quick
work by public safety offi-
cers with possibly saving
his life following the heart
attack.
The public safety de-
partment has been seeking
the sophisticated, $1,000
piece of equipment for some
time, according to Glenford
S. Leonard, public safety di-
rector, but had not been able
to get it due to tight
budgets.
