Trotsky's Kin
Studying Torah
JERUSALEM (JNI) — A
great-grandson of Leon
Trotsky is studying Torah
at the Itri Yeshiva in
Jerusalem, Prof. Herman
Branover revealed during
the recent 6th International
Seminar on World Jewry
and the State of Israel.
Branover indicated his
hope for long-term Jewish
survival in response to the
despair expressed by many
of the participating Israeli
and Diaspora scholars and
laymen from around the
world.
Soviet leader Trotsky,
son of a Ukrainian
Jewish farmer, led the
revolutionary army of
the early Bolshevik re-
gime. Quite aware of the
fact that his Jewish ori-
gin was a political hand-
icap, Trotsky favored
total assimilation in
order to facilitate the "ul-
timate solution" of the
Jewish problem through
the international
Socialist reshaping of
society. He later modified
his extreme assimilatory
stand.
The seminar also heard
motions for the complete re-
organization of the Zionist
movement, the abolition of
fundraising organizations
for Israel and a program re-
quiring Diaspora youth to
volunteer for one year in Is-
rael.
Hospital Cuts
Morphine Dosage
JERUSALEM (JNI) — A
new Israeli method of re-
lieving pain for relatively
long periods without related
negative side-effects is
being used ever more widely
by hospitals throughout the
world, reported the latest
issue of "Harefuah," journal
of the Israel Medical Asso-
ciation.
The method developed by
the Hadassah University
_Medical Center Anes-
thesiology Department in-
volves the injection of tiny
doses of morphine into the
epidural' space around the
spinal cord.
Conventional injection of
narcotics requires five
times the dosage, commonly
causing negative side-
effects and possible addic-
tion. A patient under the
new method remains awake
and can function fairly fully
to aid rehabilitation.
