Judah's Dream and King David's Sword

thor of this Hanuka story

New York.)
When the aged Mat-
tathias, father of the famed
Maccabee brothers, died,
his valiant son Judah led
the Jewish warriors in the
fight against their Greek
rulers. Judah's fighters

were able to liberate large
areas of the land by using
hit-and-run tactics that
brought quick victories over
enemy strongholds.
But as the Maccabee
forces advanced on
Jerusalem, Judah realized
that he would now have to
face the well-equipped
Greek army that guarded
the capital. He knew that a
big battle was to take place,
one that might decide the

future of the war and of the

Jewish nation and Judah
worried about his poorly-
outfitted soldiers.
"Devotion and love of God
and homeland are fine qual-
ities in a fighting man, but
an army must have-
weapons," he thought sadly
as he studied the map that
lay before him. And as he
was planning and con-
templating, troubled
thoughts and the heat of the
day overtook the Maccabee
leader and he fell asleep.
Suddenly, he saw his
father Mattathias stand-
ing before him. He looked
tall and serene and the
long, red beard with
which he liked to play as
a small boy flowed down
gently almost to his waist.
For alorief moment Judah
thought of his happy child-
hood in the home of the
small-town priest, but then
he reminded himself of the
forthcoming -battle, against
the powerful enemy and
pleaded with his father for
help.
"Father," Judah said,
"our warriors chose me as
their leader after your
death. So far we have been
victorious in the many bat-
tles we have fought. But
now we have to face the
Greek brigades that guard
Jerusalem. We are badly in
need of weapons. Please
father, advise me how I can
get them."
Mattathias stroked the
long, soft beard, thought for
a moment and thus spoke to
his son: "At the foot of Mt.
Moriah on which the Tem-
ple is built, there is a heavy
granite boulder. Under this
huge rock lies a sword, now
rusty and dull, that once be-
longed to our great King
David.
"Find a fearless soldier
who would dare to sneak
through the _enemy lines
and send him to fetch this
sword of King David.
When he returns build a
fire and leave the sword
in the flames. A miracle
will occur that will make
the Maccabees as vic-
torious in the next battle
as they have been in the
past."

Popularity Poll

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
A poll by the PORI institute
shows that Ariel Sharon is
the most popular member of
the Israeli Cabinet.
Sharon received 50.3 per-
cent, Menahem Begin 45
percent, finance Minister
Yoram Aridor 35.6 percent,
Interior Minister Yosef
Burg 21.1 percent.

1111 W11

As Mattathias finished he
looked warmly at his son
and disappeared.
On waking, Judah sent a
fearless soldier to fetch
King David's sword. When
he returned, a fire was
lighted into which Judah
placed the sword. The sword
burned with a deep red glow
and then it disappeared.
And lo, row after row of
swords stood where David's
rusty weapon had been.
As the fire died out Judah
and his officers distributed
the swords to their warriors.
Soon the main battle took
place. The Maccabees won a
decisive victory over the
Greek - Syrian forces and
Jerusalem was free again.
