— In an interview with the
Los Angeles Times, U.S.
Secretary of Defense Caspar
Weinberger has revealed
something of his Jewish
roots. He told reporter
Robert Toth:
"My father's parents
Weinberger, was born in
Denver and married
Cerise Carpenter
Hampson,_ daughter of
Charles Hampson, an
Englishman. Caspar and
his brother were raised in
the "general mold" of
their mother's Episcopa-
lian faith.
In the past, an acquain-
tance told the Los Angeles
Times that Weinberger was
reticent about his Jewish

Republican nomination to
be California's attorney
general. He lost and one
former political associate
attributed his defeat, in
some part, to the fact that
"the gentiles thought he
was Jewish and the Jews
knew he was a gentile."
