Court Challenge
for Sabbath Play
NEW YORK — A joint
friend-of-the-court brief has
been filed in New Jersey by
the National Jewish Corn-
mission on Law and Public
Affairs (COLPA) and the
American Jewish Congress.
The brief refers to a case
now before the New Jersey
Supreme Court involving a
Teaneck high school drama-
tic group.
A policy adopted by the
Teaneck Board of Education
barred scheduling of extra-
curricular events on Friday
nights, Saturdays or Sun-
day mornings. The board
said its intent was to elimi-
nate discriminatory prac-
tices in the public- schools,
among which it included the
denial of opportunity to
' Sabbath-observing stu-
dents to participate in
extra-curricular activities.
COLPA and the AJCon-
gress support this position.
The policy was chal-
lenged in 1978 by a Teaneck
student drama club known
as the Playcrafters, which
had scheduled perfor-
mances of a play for Friday
and Saturday evenings. The
New Jersey Civil Liberties
Union, representing the
drama club, charged viola-
tion of the church-state sep-
aration principle, claiming
the school board's policy
was designed to conform to
the religious practices of
some of its students, in vio-
lation of the federal and
New Jersey state constitu-
tions.
