THE
MERE
THOUGHT that such a
stellar dinner-theater per-
former as Jimmy Launce
would be appearing, might
have been enough to dispel
thoughts about the show
being anything but good.
However, we had to see
for ourselves ... and so still
remembering Jimmy's
wonderful performance in
"Prisoner of 2nd Avenue" a
while back at the former
Squire's Table, we were
geared for the best again.
The show was "Tribute"
by Bernard Slade, pre-
sented by Jimmy Launce
Productions at Somerset
Dinner Theater on Big Be-
aver in Troy ... and directed
by Hal Youngblood.
First came dinner ... as
tables were named after
theatrical stars (ours was
James Caan) and called
in orderly fashion ... Not
being the greatest lover
of cattle-herding buffets,
we could appreciate even.
more the well-organized
system ... although it
seemed that as good an
actor as Jimmy Caan is,
'that's how quickly his
name appeared to almost
be forgotten.
It was a Saturday eve-
ning, and Jimmy Launce's
drawing power is a tremen-
dous credit to his acting
ability ... The downstairs at
Somerset Mall was crowded
to capacity for dinner ... and
then people were let in to sit
along the sides after dining
was over.
Jimmy can talk all he
wants about wife Brigitte
but still doesn't say enough
nice things ... She's Mrs.
Launce and Mrs. Every-
thing at the dinner-theater
. smiling pretty as most
models do ... hostessing,
taking care of public rela-
tions, helping with promo-
tions, etc. ... Also, Jimmy
grew a mustache for "Trib-
ute" which she would like
him to keep ... "but only if he
wants to" ... Jim says he'd
like it full, but the stash
won't grow ... Got any ideas
for him?
Seated with another
couple was enjoyable ... only
because they were two
really nice people ... out for
the evening ... and enjoying
every bit of the first dinner-
theater they'd ever
attended.
"Tribute" has every-
thing ... humor, pathos
and so very true to life ...
as it weaves its way
through two stellar acts
of solid performance by
an excellent cast that
makes stars out of
everyone.
A very happy director,
Hal Youngblood, sat on the
side laughing, crying and
for the first time since its
opening, watching ' the
rhythmic results of his mas-
terful direction go so very
near to perfection.
Those who might have
seen "Tribute" on Broad-
way, starring Jack Lem-
mon, might have said that
Bernard Slade had him in
mind when he wrote the

show ... The same could hold
true for Jimmy Launce, who
seems the perfect charming
irresponsible, witty, ladies
man Scottie Templeton ...
the Broadway press agent
and former script writer
who takes nothing seriously
... including love and
fatherhood ... To him, life is
just one big gag.
But he discovers that his
life has been rewritten in
the middle as a tragedy ...
His alienated son confronts
him with charges of neglect
... Then a reconciliation and
he gets Scottie to agree to be
hospitalized for treatment.
Author Slade, who also
wrote "Same Time Next
Year," has produced a
magnificent script ...
encompassing excellent
lines, humorous jokes
and touchingly sober
reality.
Jimmy Launce and his
cast of seven are wonder-
fully adept ... each playing
his or her part with the de-
xterity demanded for a show
of this type ... From begin-
ning to end, the applause is
well deserved for each
poised member of the cast ...
as they held the audience in
the palms of their hands ...
laughing and crying in a
show presentation to which
so many people can relate ...
with its eye-opening mes-
sages.
There's no end to the ta-
lents of Jimmy Launce
Besides being a very fine
disc jockey over WJR radio
. one of the area's best
dinner-theater performers
... and head of his own prod-
uction company ... Jimmy
plays piano and composes
songs ... like Scottie's theme
in the local presentation at
Somerset Dinner Theater.
"Tribute" is a truly de-
lightful show ... It is hard to
relate to anyone else, out-
