Goorwitz Combines Careers
With Editor's Role in 'Divide'

By HERBERT LUFT

(Copyright 1981. JTA, Inc.)

HOLLYWOOD — Allen
Goorwitz, himself a
journalist-turned-actor,
portrays a Chicago Sun-
Ti mes editor in the
Universal-Steven Spielberg
production of "Continental
Divide," in which funny-
man John Belushi plays it
straight as an investigating
columnist. Goorwitz, re-
nders a three-dimensional
characterization in a rather
brief though key role in the
film, which sways from
romantic comedy to melod-
rama.
Goorwitz's career roots go
back to his high school days
in Newark, N.J., when he
was torn between a career
in acting and journalism. "I
was a copy boy for the
Star-Ledger," he reveals,
"and later became the
paper's school sports re-
porter." As a boxer on the
side, he fought his way into
a Golden Gloves competi-
tion and became a winner at
the age of 16.
During the filming of
"Continental Divide,"
Goorwitz was a regular vis-
itor to the Chicago Sun-
Times, his alma mater, fre-
quently huddling with
real-life editors and spend-
ing a great deal of time
hanging around the city
rooms and the editorial
offices.
He won attention in the
cinema in 1967 when he ap-
peared opposite Robert De
Niro in Brian De Palma's
"Greetings" and "Hi, Mom."
He was then known as Allen
Garfield, a stage name he
adopted after seeing his idol
John Garfield in "Body and
Soul." Years later, he be-
came Allen Goorwitz again.
On the screen, he por-
trays chubby, rather indeci-
sive characters in such pic-
tures as "The Conversa-
tion," "The Candidate,"

"The Owl and the Pus-
sycat," "Taking Off," "The
Front Page," and

"Nashville." In the comedy,
"The Brink's Job," he ap-
peared as the clumsy,
rather stupid brother-in-
law and partner-in-crime of
Peter Falk.
Goorwitz is married to
Mimi Leder, a filmmaker
and theater director who is
now at the helm of the stage
presentation of Fania Fene-
lon's "Playing for Time."
JERRY BICK is the pro-
ducer of "Anaconda,"

termed a story of love, mar-
der and the conflict between
two brothers set against the
panorama of copper mines
of Montana, 1915 period.

Chaplain Wins
Rank Promotion .

NEW YORK — Rabbi
Ephraim Sturm, executive
vice president of the Na-
tional Council of Young Is-
rael, has been promoted to
Lieutenant Colonel, the
highest rank of any Jewish
chaplain in the New York
State National Guard.

An ounce of contentment
is worth a-pound of sadness.

Michael Apted, the British
director, who also guided
"Continental Divide" and
Bernard Schwartz's
Academy Award winning
- Coal Miner's Daughter,"
will be at the helm of
"Anaconda," which is now
scouting locations in the
West.
