Last visit there was for a
filet mignon by Chef Don
Kenner . . and a sampling
of his Bearnaise sauce . . .
Both were excellent .
The filet couldn't have been
seasoned or cooked better
. . . and certainly no waste
of very choice meat . . . Liz
Andrew was our smiling, ef-
ficient and charming wait-
ress.

MAIL DEPT.. . . "En-
closed is a letter to the Lark
Restaurant after a disast-
rous evening there. Let me
relate the incident leading
to it.
"Three couples had a 9
p.m. reservation there and
it was honored. We were
seated, and shortly thereaf-
ter the waiter took our bar
order. The ladies had a glass
of wine, and the gentleman
each ordered a martini.
"We sat a while and fi-
nally the waiter brought us
some 'fried bread.' About
9:40 he took our entree or-
ders, and we ordered
another round of drinks. We
sat quite a while longer and
finally the waiter came over
and served us from the hors
d'oeuvres cart.
"A while later we were
served the second course.
Then we waited, and
waited. At 10:30, the waiter
came over and informed us
that they couldn't accom-
modate our orders — they
had run out. All this time,
Mr. Lark didn't come near

our table.
"By this time we were
very hungry and terribly
riled, so we told the waiter
to please total our bill — we
were going to leave. Then
Mr. Lark finally came over
and said that because there
were too many duplicate or-
ders at our table, they
couldn't accommodate us
and offered to buy us a drink
( which we refused), and
would we care to reorder
something else. We told him.
that if we did, we probably
wouldn't be served until
11:30, and that we would
prefer to leave.
"When the bill was pre-
sented, our husbands were
in a state of shock. The
charge was $110 which he
claimed was for the drinks
(which he was entitled to),
and the two courses, which
we wouldn't have had know-
ing he couldn't take care of
our orders."
Mrs. Ben Rubens
"Dear Mr. Lark: I have
never felt such outrage and
so 'ripped off as last Satur-
day night (Sept. 19) at your
restaurant.
To sit at our table from 9
p.m. until 10:30 and then
have the waiter tell us the
kitchen could only fill two
orders out of six — and then
have the utter nerve to
charge what you did was an
utter abomination.
"You were certainly enti-
tled to the cost of the drinks,
but had we been informed
shortly after we had given
our orders that you were out
of everything, then we could
have decided whether or not
we wanted to re-order or
leave. We didn't have to
wait until the first two
courses were served.
"I shudder to think what
the bill would have been
had we been served the
third course, and then been
given the news. But, to sit
and wait until 10:30, and
then inform us you 'ran
out'!!! Had we re-ordered,
we probably wouldn't have
been served until after 11
p.m. We didn't come to 'sup,'
we came to dine.
"It was our 40th wedding
anniversary, and we were
looking forward to a de-
lightful evening, but you
certainly turned it into a
fiasco."
Very truly yours,
Mrs. Ben Rubens
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cohen
Mr. and Mrs. L. Kalish
Copy of reply from The
Lark is sent to the column:
"Dear Mrs. Rubens: Re-
sponding to your letter of
Sept. 22, with copies to
three restaurant critics, you
have led a truly blessed life
if you 'have never felt such
outrage . . as . . at' The
Lark. I wish having a re-
staurant run out of chicken
was the worst that had ever
happened to me or mine.
In any event, to correct
the record:
"1. You did not sit from 9
to 10:30 to find the kitchen
was out of four of six en-
trees. You sat at the bar for
a while since all of your
party had not arrived, al-
