Wishes Their Family and Friends

A Jew in the Gulag:
Birobidzhan Affair'

By MARK FRIEDMAN

JWB Jewish Book Council
NEW YORK — The

Birobidzhan Affair" is the
moving memoir of a Yiddish
poet who spent eight years
at hard labor in Siberia dur-
ing the Stalinist era. Israel
Emiot (Goldwasser) was a
young man of 30 when he
fled the Nazi invasion of Po-
land and went to the Soviet
Union.
In 1944, Emiot was drawn
to Birobidzhan— a Siberian
"homeland" for the Jewish
people — where he worked
as a Yiddish journalist until
his arrest in 1948 for "at-
tempting to introduce . Yid-
dish culture artificially."
This book relates his ex-
periences until his release
in 1953. It is translated by
Max Rosenfeld and pub-
lished by the Jewish Publi-
cation Society of America.
"The Birobidzhan Affair"
is a fascinating tale of life in
the world of the Gulag
which Solzhenitsyn made
famous. There is an over-
whelming feeling of terror
and uncertainty — not
knowing what to expect nor
what is expected of the pris-
oner Emiot.

With time Emiot began to
move in the artificial, yet
very real, world of the
camps. There are many vig-
nettes of the types of people
he met in the camps — intel-
lectuals, anti-Semites, un-
derworld figures, former
Nazis, and people from
many of the diverse
nationalities which consti-
tute the Soviet Union. Most
interesting are the Jewish
types: the Hasidim, the
half-Jews, and the Oriental
Jews.
There is a particularly
touching story of a Jewish
violinist who fought with
camp administrators to play
Kol Nidrei for the prisoners.
This book should be read
by anyone interested in a
very personal and sensitive
view of the "black years" of
Soviet Jewry. In a deeper
sense it shows how life con-
tinues and societies develop
under the most extreme ad-
versity.
However, the book tells
us almost nothing about the
curious episode of Birobid-
zhan, although some of this
background is supplied in a
well-written introduction
by Michael Stanislawski.

What other dungeon is so
dark as one's own heart!
What jailer so inexorable as
one's self!
—Hawthorne
