The major categories of
Jewish books continued un-
changed last year, but there
were the beginnings of new
directions in some of the
categories.
Books on Israel, for in-
stance, included several
volumes devoted not only to
the ongoing peace process
but also to Israel's diploma-
tic history in light of the
new initiatives in the Mid-
dle East.
Holocaust memoirs con-
tinued to be published
alongside new revelations
of the "civilized" world's
unwillingness to intercede
on behalf of the Jews.
Religious books for adults
who lack Jewish knowledge
were numerous and of high

quality.
Books about American
Jews continued a still un-
completed search for the
Jews' place in America, a
search revealing continued
insecurity despite outward
success.
Each of the following
books is highly recom-
mended. All are inform-
ative and quite readable.
The list is in alphabetical
order.
THE BATTLE FOR
PEACE by Ezer Weizman
(Bantam Books).
Ezer Weizman is known
for his blunt rendition of his
views and his imaginative
approach to dealing with Is-
rael's enemies. These char-
acteristics are in abundance
in this book.
The former Minister of
Defense traces the road to
Camp David, the moral
struggles within his own
and the Israeli soul concern-
ing the idealistic hopes and
realistic expectations for
President Sadat's stagger-
ing offer of peace, and the
practical political accounts
of the peace process.
Most controversial is
Weizman's description of
Prime Minister Begin's per-
formance as peacemaker.
DESTINATION
PEACE: THREE DE-
CADES OF ISRAELI
FOREIGN POLICY by
Gideon Rafael (Stein and
Day).
This book is a perfect
background work for Weiz-
man's and for current Is-
raeli diplomacy. The
author, a former member of
the Israeli foreign service,
surveys Israeli diplomatic
history, uncovering a series
of failures which stand out
in sharp contrast to the
military and numerous
other successes of the fledgl-
ing Jewish state.
Each crisis is individually
analyzed from a unique
perspective rarely offered to
American readers.
THE JOURNEYS OF
DAVID TOBACK by
Carole Malkin (Schocken
Books)
The story of the Jewish
journey to America has as-
sumed mythic proportions
to contemporary readers.
Many tales of the first years
in the New World exist.
Most of these contain an ini-
tial chapter or two on the
Europe that was left. Here
is an immigrant story told
completely about the old
country.
David Toback, a butcher
with a desire to write, left
an account in Yiddish of his
life. His granddaughter,
author of this book, has
taken a translation of that
account and re-told the
physical and spiritual jour-
neys David Toback and mil-
lions of other Jews took.
NINE QUESTIONS
PEOPLE ASK ABOUT
JUDAISM by Dennis
Prager and Joseph
Telushkin (Simon and
Schuster).
Dennis Prager, of the
Brandeis Bardin Institute
in California, is a young,
energetic, and forceful voice
for remaining Jewish and
