Expressing Jewish Identity
Easily Achieved in Israel
(Continued from Page 100) Socialism and the kibutzim
out the framework of reli- to many, were the forces
gious 'Commitment. Surely,
through the centuries, the
yearning to return to the
ancestral homeland was
basically a religious yearn-
ing, fortified in prayer, ob-
servances and even mourn-
ing. Yet, the fact remains
that a major thrust toward
the establishment of the
state of Israel was provided
by non-religious, if not
anti-religious people.

Furthermore, it must
be recognized that the
Jew in Israel has many
opportunities to express
his Jewish identification:
the Hebrew language,
service in the army, the
official rest days on
Shabat and Jewish holi-
day. Here, many contend,
Jewish life can flourish
without religious obser-
vance.
Yet, can it? As time
passes the erosion that took
place in the U.S. and
elsewhere begins to show its
signs in Israel. Young
people begin to question the
Jewish people's right to the
land, to "disperse" Arabs.
They have few qualms
about leaving their native
country. Yerida is by far
largest among the non-
religious, while most olim
from free countries are reli-
giously motivated.
Even in Israel, youth
question the meaning of
Jewish peoplehood. He is an
Israeli, not a Jew. Many are
the youth who have served
in the army who choose to
reside elsewhere — after
also receiving their univer-
sity tuition at government
expense. Not so for the reli-
gious soldier or student.
If, as in all secular states,
civil marriages are
legalized in Israel, the pos-
sibility of intermarriage —
as elsewhere — will be nur-
tured. Why not? Secularly,
there is no difference be-
tween Jew and non-Jew.
There is no Jewish,
Catholic, Islamic, or French
or English secularism.
These distinctions are reli-
gious or nationalist. The
Jewish peoplehood tran-
scends by its nature, both
religious and nationalism
and blends both into one
uniqueness. Both are essen-
tial.
The future, as the past,
portends then, that only
that segment of the Jewish
people that remains true to
its religious tradition —
which includes a loyalty to
the Jewish state (for this is
what Israel is meant to be)
is the guarantee of Jewish
continuity.
