New Dead Sea Oil Project Is Joint U.S.-Israel Effort
By DULCY LEIBLER
JERUSALEM — The
Dead Sea is famous for its
ability to keep people afloat.
Perhaps it will soon be re-
sponsible for keeping Is-
rael's economy afloat as

geological surveys which
indicate the possibility of
significant oil deposits in

well in Israel.
The Israel government
is putting up $9 million in
shekalim loans for the
project. The total annual
budget for Israel's explo-
ration efforts is only $30
million per year, so,

be tied up in the project.
While this project is a
high risk venture, its poten-
tial benefits — should oil be
found — are also very great.
The economic advantages
are obvious. Some 98 per-
cent of Israel's energy needs
are filled with imported oil.
In 1980, this cost the nation
some $2.1 billion.
The discovery of oil would
have enormous political
implications as well. Israel
is presently cut off from at
least two-thirds of the
world's oil sources, making
it particularly vulnerable.
It relies upon the distinctly
