Samuel "Sammy" Re-
shevsky is back in the
limelight.
Last weekend, Reshevsky
participated in a playoff in
Jacksonville, Fla. to deter-
mine the third American
contender for the 1984
world chess championship.
It has been nearly 50 years
since a player of Reshevs-
ky's age (69) has been rated
one of the best chess players
in the world.
Reshevsky was America's
top grandmaster for more
than 20 years until Bobby
Fischer burst onto the scene
in 1957 at the age of 14.
During the 1970s, Reshevs-
ky's performance was spotty
and chess commentators
began to talk of the ap-
proaching end of a great
career. However, Reshevs-
ky's play at this summer's
United States Chess Cham-
pionships has silenced the
critics.

Because of his -many
roles, those in the game,
as a very religious man,
as accountant and insur-
ance salesman, he be-
came more than just a
"gifted player." In truth,
he is a personality.
He will be remembered as
a former Detroiter who
came here with his parents
and other members of the
family from Poland with the
help of philanthropist
Julius Rosenwald of Sears
Roebuck.
Actually, it was Morris
Steinberg who engineered
his coming to Detroit when
he was 10 or 11. The late Mr.

NEW YORK — A wide-
range of materials, de-
signed to enhance obser-
vance of the Jewish High

and home is available from
the Board of Jewish Educa-
tion of Greater New York.
The materials offered in-
clude: "Sneakers to Shul," a
story about a young boy and
his family's preparation for
Yom Kippur; a slide set
from Israel, depicting holi-
day observance among di-
verse communities in the
country; and the new World
Over Calendar, which in-
cludes all Jewish, American
and Israeli holidays and
significant dates.
There is a charge for these

bin, who eventually became
the world checker cham-
pion. Thus the world chess
and checker champions had

chess tournaments, in-
terested the late Fred M.
Butzel in the sensational
child prodigy who was beat-
ing champs at the chess ta-
bles.

Steinberg arranged many
chess contests for him. One
of them was a game which
Sammy played blindfolded
with 30 contestants in the
conference room of the De-
troit News, beating them
all.
"This-was a mere sam-
ple of what he had done
to all contestants, playing
many blindfolded, re-
membering all the details
of the game," Myron
Steinberg, brother of the
late Morris Steinberg re-
called.
Myron said his brother
Morris made the Sammy
Reshevsky career a matter
of deep personal interest,
dedicating himself to the
youth.
"My brother Morris made
chess and checkers his life's
dedication, and Sammy was
his chief objective. Morris
contributed more than any-
one else in this country to
assure that Sammy's games
and contests were properly
planned," Myron Steinberg
said.
Myron recalls that
Sammy Reshevsky, when
he entered Northern High
School, was assigned a

lockers next to each other in
the Detroit high school, al-
though they did not meet
until much later. Rubin
died two years ago.

LONDON — The Inter-
national Council of Jews
from Czechoslovakia re-
ports that the Czech gov-
ernment has reached
agreement with "the Coun-
cil of Jewish Religious
Communities" to turn
cemeteries into parks.
Affected cemeteries are
those for which mainte-
nance funds are reportedly
no longer available.
The IGIC said the Czechs
have promised to Place
"appropriate memorials" in
the parks. In the early
1970s, the ICJC said, the
Czechs expropriated many
Jewish cemeteries for pub-
lic projects.
