Opposition Erupts Against AWACS for Saudi Arabia

(Continued from Page 1)
Rep. Edward Der-
winski (R-I11.), a member of
the House Foreign Affairs
Committee, said the pro-
posal to sell the AWACS
was "untimely and unwise,
a major error in legislative
strategy as well as in
foreign policy."
Sen. Carl Levin (D-
Mich.), a member of the
Senate Armed ServiCes
Committee, said that the
decision to sell AWACS to

the security of our most

equipment."
Over the weekend, Sen.
Howard Baker of Tennes-
see, the Republican major-
ity leader in the Senate,
formally announced that he
would support the sale.
Baker had visited Saudi
Arabia and Israel earlier
this year and had expressed
support for the sale.
In New York, Rabbi Sol
Roth, president of the Rab-
binical Council of America,
announced that the more
than 1,000 rabbis in

synagogues throughout the
United States would deliver
sermons within the next six
weeks and during the High
Holy Days against the pro-
posed sale. He said the rab-
bis would also call on their
congregants to "let their
voices be heard" through
letters to their elected
representatives and per-
sonal meetings with them.
Statements opposing the
sale were also issued by
leaders of major Jewish
organizations. The thrust of
these statements was that

Call for Germany to Pass
Law Against Arab Boycott

BONN (JTA) — The
former West German Am-
bassador to Israel, Klaus
Schuetz, has called on the
Bonn government to enact a
law against the Arab
boycott of firms dealing
with Israel.
In a letter to the chair-
man of the three parliamen-
tary factions in the Bundes-
tag, Schuetz called their at-
tention to the recent deci-
sion by the French govern-
ment to enforce a law
against the Arab boycott
and said that this should
serve as an example to
German lawmakers.
The former envoy, who is
now director of the
government-operated radio
station, Deutsche Welle, re-
jected the popular argu-
ment here that a legal move
against the boycott would
be counter-productive and
possibly inimical to German
interests.

Germany's close political
ties with France and the
membership of both
countries in the Euro-
