Baker had visited Saudi Arabia and Israel earlier this year and had expressed support for the sale. In New York, Rabbi Sol Roth, president of the Rab- binical Council of America, announced that the more than 1,000 rabbis in synagogues throughout the United States would deliver sermons within the next six weeks and during the High Holy Days against the pro- posed sale. He said the rab- bis would also call on their congregants to "let their voices be heard" through letters to their elected representatives and per- sonal meetings with them. Statements opposing the sale were also issued by leaders of major Jewish organizations. In a letter to the chair- man of the three parliamen- tary factions in the Bundes- tag, Schuetz called their at- tention to the recent deci- sion by the French govern- ment to enforce a law against the Arab boycott and said that this should serve as an example to German lawmakers.
