THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Symbolic Act Explained
By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.)
It is required to wash
one's hands upon getting up
in the morning according to
Jewish tradition.
Water is a symbol of re-
birth and re-creation. Every
person is born in a medium
of water in his mother's
body. Water was about the
first physical ingredient
mentioned in the Bible in
the Book of Genesis where
the creation process is men-
tioned.
Some authorities (e.g.
Rashba) indicate that when
one gets up in the morning
he becomes a new person —
having been re-born and
re-created. Thus, one
washes his hands to sym-
bolize this effect.
More practical halakhic
sources claim that the
washing is required because
during one's lying in bed his
hands may have touched
items on his body that
would render him impure.

Israeli Procedure
JERUSALEM (JNI) —
The Federal Bureau of In-
vestigation (FBI) has
adopted Israeli methods to
identify substances on the
bodies of suspects as evi-
dence admissable in court,
according to Meir Kaplan,
chairman of the criminal
identification department
of the Israel police.
Among the methods are: a
process to establish the use
of a gun from a chemical
residue on the holder's
hand, a spray for valuable
objects which leaves an in-
visible stain on the thief's
skin and a new way of lift-
ing fingerprints from paper.
