LISTENING
POST

NINE YEARS AGO,
Ernie Backalar and David
Otis of the Bedford Area
Citizens for Muscular Dys-
trophy, held their first car-
nival for Muscular Dys-
trophy at the home of Judie
and Jerry Weisman .. .
Each year, the carnival
grew . . . and from that first
one held in the backyard to
last year's annual Superfair
in Tel-12 Mall, the group
has raised over $40,000.
This Sunday, the Super-
fair will be held again in
Tel-12 Mall, 12 noon to 6
p.m: ... with proceeds to
provide clinic services for
anyone with Muscular Dys-
trophy as well as world-
wide research efforts.
THE WORLD OF IN-
CREDIBLE has come to
Jerry Gurwin's Autobody
Klinic on W. Eight Mile Rd.
.. . as his becomes only the
third shop in Michigan to
have an auto bench frame
straightening machine.
No more guesswork in
straightening frames with
this $30,000 do all that as-

sures 100 percent accuracy
by the use of jigs for perfect
alignment . . . Some cars
normally total losses, can
now be successfully re-
paired . . . Already Jerry is
getting requests from other
body shops and dealers for
sublet work or complete
service and finishing at his
shop . . . The new positive
system to repair and rebuild
today's unitized auto-
mobiles is an amazing ad-
vance . . . as Jerry Gurwin
continues great steps for-
ward looking for better
things to serve his custom-
ers.
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS to Sheila Freed-
man.
ERRATA . . . First
Sidewalk Sale at Hunters
Square, Orchard Lake Rd.
and 14 Mile, is three days
not four ... July 23, today
y.
and Saturda
THIS IS THE 12th year
of Charter House Barbers
on Nine Mile ... opened by
Roy Calley and Al Nettle
. . . Previously, they had
been three years at the
North Park Towers . . . So
much has happened in the
tonsorial world since then
. . . Mainly that of women
who never before thinking
of going into a men's barber
shop . . . now regular cus-
tomers . . . Unisex is a big
thing today ... Roy, one of
the area's premier hair
piece artists, still looks with
awe on the many revolu-
tionary things in covering
balded pates . . . so many
that could never have been
done years ago . . . And the
materials are beyond belief,
says Roy . . . like liquid silk
bases that are stronger than
others . . . and look like a
person's skin . . . So many
things to enthuse even an
old pro like Roy.
BIGGEST WEDDING
of the year . . . was that of
Suzanne (Lichtenstein) to
Harvey Fallen . . . Wed re-
cently at Lake Tahoe, Nev.'s
Chapel of the Bells . . . with
30 other couples.
IT DOESN'T COST
MONEY to lose weight at
T.O.P.S. (Take Off Pounds
Sensibly) . . . In fact, the
local members make dough
. . . They don't pay dues for a
month if a number of
pounds is lost . . . and then
get money from club treas-
ury on more poundage lost
. . . T.O.P.S. meets every
Wednesday 8 p.m. at De-
troit 55 Lodge, Knights of
Pythias, hall on Coolidge in
Berkley . . .For more info,
call Lou Berman evenings,
LI 7-1472.
GET WELL WISHES
... to Marty Moss . . . re-
cuperating at home from
broken leg bones . . . after
falling while roller skating
. . . Marty was in Beaumont
Hospital . . . and will be out
of work six months.

Confidence is a plant of
slow growth.

FLORENCE LOPATIN
couldn't believe her ears
when the girl at Metro Air-
port's National Car Rental
called at 5:30 p.m. that her
nephew was in town .. .
What was he doing here
from Israel, Flo thought .. .
and how did the gal under-
stand him? . . . The story
began to unfold later when
Larry LoPatin got home and
saw the three Israeli
couples . . . all born deaf .. .
who were traveling in
America.
They had already been to
New York, Miami, New Or-
leans, Las Vegas, San Fran-
cisco, Chicago, Niagara
Falls, Buffalo . . . and have
left to conclude their trip
with a Boston visit and then
New York again en route
back to -Israel.
Florence's nephew, Hav
Near and his wife had met
each other in a Haifa school
. . . His mother, Hanna, is
Florence's sister-in-law,
married to her brother
Hillel . . . Hav Near thought
his mother had written that
they were coming . . . Seems
that they rented a car at
Hertz, but the lassie
couldn't understand them
(the three Israeli girls speak
no English and the gents do
some with much difficulty)
. . . She remembered about
the girl at National having
a daughter who was deaf . . .
and asked her to help out.
The three Israeli couples
on an eight-week tour of
America are a wonderful
example of what handi-
capped people with a pur-
pose can do . . . There is no
greater asset than the will
to _achieve.
CONGRATS ... to Bob
and Essie Sisman . . . re-
cently celebrating their
35th anniversary . . . Bob's
60th birthday is also this
year.
