TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
Turkish national airline
has announced that it is
suspending its flights to Is-
rael, amid uncertainty
whether the step is being
taken for economic or politi-
cal reasons.
The recently-published
timetable showed a planned
increase from one to two
flights a week. Last year the
airline - had a profitable
passenger rate on its
Istanbul-to-Lod route.
The airline says it has
decided to suspend its Is-
rael flights for economic
reasons, but some Israeli
officials note that, in
addition to its favorable
income from Israel
flights, it is inaugurating
flights to Libya and the
Persian Gulf.
El Al presently operates
two flights a week to Istan-
bul and is due to increase
these to three a week this
month.
