man. Jewish communities
represented at the first
meeting were India, Singa-
pore, Taiwan; the Philip-
pines, Japan, Korea, Au-
stralia, New Zealand and
Hong Kong.
The new group im-
mediately established the
Bulletin, a periodic news-
paper; the first edition of
September 1980 announced
that APJA was comprised of
10 Jewish communities
(adding Thailand) for a total
Jewish population of more
than 80,000.

Plans were detailed for
"intensification of educa-
tional activities for both
children and adults, the
need to establish teenage-
youth activities and possi-
bly hold youth camps." The
same first Bulletin wel-
comed to Tokyo Rabbi
Jonathan Z. Maltzman and
his wife Julie; during the
weekend of Sept. 5 and 6 the
new Jewish Community
Center in Tokyo was offi-
cially opened by Israel am-
bassador Designate Amnon
Ben-Yohanan. In October
1980, the Taipei Jewish
community celebrated its
fifth anniversary.

November 1980 de-
lineated the Hanuka fes-
tival in great detail. Good
news included the re-
opening of the Hebrew
school in Hong Kong
under the direction of Ms.
Micheline Burke, and the
expansion of the Singa-
pore Hebrew School
under Rabbi Ben Zalin.
Fifteen pages of other
news, especially from In-
dia, revealed the extent of
activities of these Jewish
communities in the Asian
Pacific.
The third Bulletin in
March 1981 clscribed the
Purim holiday, and con-
tained announcements of
world-wide Jewish activi-
ties. The small community
of Taipei under the leader-
ship of Yaakov Liberman
has a full range of Jewish
activity. Author Chaim
Potok was the guest of
honor at a "Confest" in Au-
stralia organized by the Au-
stralian Union of Jewish
Students and the Hillel
Foundation, as a cultural
festival for Jewish youth
from the Asia Pacific areas.
The executive director of
APJA is Kurt Rathner,
whose office is at 343 Little
Collins St., 12th Floor, Mel-
bourne, Victoria, Australia

Officers of APJA are I. J.

Death of German
With Jewish Tie
Still a Mystery

BONN (JTA) — West
German police have no
clues yet in the murder of
Heinz-Herbers Karry, the
economic minister of the
state of Hesse, who was shot
to death in his home in
Karlsuhe last week.
Although the Third Reich
Movement, a neo-Nazi
organization, claimed re-
sponsibility for the killing,
the Federal Prosecutor said
at a press conference that he
does not believe it was in
any way connected with the
crime. -
Karry, 61, had a Jewish
father and members of his
family perished in the
Holocaust. He himself spent
part of the Nazi era in a con-
centration camp. His mur:
der was the second this
month that has police in
Germany and Austria puz-
zled as to whether there
were political or racial
motivations.
A prominent Socialist of-
ficial of the Vienna munici-
pal government was fatally
shot there on May 1. The
victim, Heinz Nittel, 50 was
not Jewish but he was
president of the Austrial-
Israel Friendship Society.
