End of an Era: Colonial
Bath House Sees Final Days
Colonial Hotel was
among the intriguing
Michigan landmarks for
more than 60 years. It is
ending an historic career.
It was like a magnet
drawing tenants and
"patients" from many
states.
For many in New York
especially it was an annual
resting and curing place for
thousands.
They came for the
baths. It was said that
many doctors recom-
mended them. Many men
made reservations a year
ahead to be able to get the
benefits of the pungent
smells that were said to
cure many illnesses.
During those years, the
"patients," the guests, could
be seen fraternizing on the
long porch.
They were the observant
who ,insisted on kashrut.
They attended religious
services. Just as Miami
Beach later became the es-
cape for tens of thousands
vacationing in the sunbelt,
so people flocked to Mount
Clemens to benefit from the
Colonial.
Today, the Colonial is
populated by welfare reci-
pients. The once elegant
hotel stands in ruin, with
peeling paint and broken
windows.
According to the De;
troit Free Press, about 40
of the 80 rooms are re-
nted. Since there are no
cooking facilities in the
upper floors, tenants
have a variety of hot
plates and toaster ovens
operating.
Mt. Clemens city officials
want the 89-year old build-
ing closed because of code
violations.
According to the Free
Press, the hotel opened as
the . Mt. Clemens
Sanitarium on Dec. 1, 1896.
It was renamed the Colonial
in 1897.
Many celebrities from
throughout the country and
from abroad came to relieve
their aches and rheumatism
at the baths.
A negative note in the
hotel's history: It once
bore a placard with the
slogan, "No dogs or Jews
allowed."
Many movements have
begun to restore the old
hotel, but costs are prohibi-
tive.

NEW YORK — A
synagogue for the Persian
Jewish Center of Brooklyn
was dedicated recently. The
center will serve the needs
of Iranian Jewish students
living in Brooklyn and will
house community activities
for these students as well as
, hundreds of Iranian Jews
living in N.Y.
The synagogue is ad-
ministered by Persian Jews
and the liturgy and prayer
books used are in the Per-
sian Jewish tradition.
