EVER HEAR OF a place
that serves liquor . . . but
you have to get it yourself
unless food is also eaten?
. . . Sounds strange, but
local restaurant gent tells of
having this experience at
Carlos Murphy on North-
western and 12 Mile . . .
After telling the manager,
he was told the waitress was
correct . . . that it was Car-
los Murphy's policy . . .
Hard to believe that any
licensed dining spot would
turn down such a big profit
item as liquor . . . The re-
staurateur says he was
shocked.
BESS BONNIER will
appear during lunch at De-
troit Plaza Hotel's Summit
Restaurant beginning May
18 from 11:30-2 Monday
through Friday . . . and at
dinner hour Sunday, Mon-
day and Tuesday, 6 to 11
p.m.
Detroit's acclaimed "First
Lady ofJazz," Bess will pre-
sent improvisational and
classical solo piano.
DURING NORTH-
FIELD HILTON Inn's re-
cent Fifth Birthday celebra-
tion, guests were invited to
submit guesses on facts and
figures concerning hotel
functions . . . with winners
receiving Unwinder
Weekend-Packages for two.
Quiz questions included
how many square yards of
carpeting (13,707), pieces of
silverware (46,047),
number of full time em-
ployees still working at the
Northfield Hilton since its
opening five years ago (16)
and actual mileage used to
transport guests in courtesy
vans (96,512 miles).
CHARLES GREEN
Jazz Quartet is at Ar-
chibald's on S. Woodward,in
Birmingham through
Saturday night . . . Jazz
flutist Alexander Zonjic
opens Tuesday and runs
through June 13 . . . Then
Lenore Paxton jazz quartet
June 16-20 . . . and Zonjic
back again June 23-27.

rive says, "Good Spirits,"
Good Food, Good People,
Good Times" . . . the at-
mosphere that former
owner Pat Campbell
created . . . and is being
continued by new boss folks
Chris and Steve
Mihailovich and Eva and
Dan Spasovsky.
Lilly Langtree's portrait,
done by local artist Michael
Zane, still hangs over one of
the five fireplaces . . . and
Pat Flowers is still at the
piano bar Tuesday through
Saturday.
PLACES WE DON'T
enjoy eating at . . . When
waitresses take cash and
then make your salad with-
out washing their hands
. . . Where the owner pays
no attention to scraps of
paper on the floor . . .
Where they use a carpet
sweeper while you're still
eating.
Where waitresses and
waiters reach across the
table to serve you . . .
Where waitresses hand you
requested silverware in-
stead of putting it on the
table . . . Where the chef or
cook comes out with his
-dirty apron.
Where stainless steel at
open grills look like they
haven't been cleaned since
year . . . Where waitresses
and waiters hand you a
menu and stand there wait-
ing for your order . . . Where
oodles of false plants are fil-
led with dust . . . Where
glass cabinets are not clean
. . . Where waitresses wear
dirty or torn uniforms.
Where the cleanliness of
restrooms is not kept up
. . . Where they don't clean
the table when you finish
eating . . . Where dirty
dishes remain in a rack
within sight of a diner . . .
Where kitchens almost look
like beat up cow pastures
. . . Where waitresses prac-
tically have hair hanging
over their face instead of
tied back.
These and so many more
do nothing but lose custom-
ers.

phenylalanine is helpful
in weight loss. What is it?
Phenylalanine is an
amino acid. It is found in
foods such as meats, cheeses
and milk. It is known to be
an extremely powerful
anti-depressant nutrient
and a great aid in weight
loss. I take a 500 mg. tablet
before bedtime, (this is the
best time to take it so it will
not compete with the other
amino acids) and it simply
makes you feel like eating
less.
I have just recently heard
of it and started taking it
several weeks ago but I find
I am amazed how it curbs
the appetite.

eous is a fountain of life: but
the mouth of the wicked
concealeth violence.
