The practice of counting
the days and weeks in a
daily evening ritual every
evening between the first
day of Passover and the first
day of Shavuot (Sefirat ha
Omer) is done for a variety
of reasons.
First, of course, this prac-
tice is prescribed in the Bi-
ble.
Also, it is claimed that
this stems from ancient
times when the pilgrims
were required to be in
Jerusalem on both of these
holidays. When they re-
turned home after the
Passover, they were occu-
pied with the harvest.
The days were ritually
counted every evening to
remind them to make
sure they returned in
time for the Shavuot
holiday in Jerusalem.
Since there was only a
seven-week interval, it
would be easy to forget
the lapse in time.
Third the count is made
to demonstrate the
eagerness which the Jew

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Leading Orthodox and Re-
form Judaism spokesmen
jointly called for a rabbini-
cal court (Beth Din) to in-
clude representatives of all
the trends in Judaism.
At a recent dialogue on
theology here, Rabbi
Shlomo Riskin, a leader of
modern Orthodoxy and
spiritual leader of the Lin-
coin Square Synagogue,
said that the Reform move-
ment was responsible for an
"irreparable schism" of
Jewish unity because of its
laws on divorce. Rabbi
Daniel Syme, national edu-
cational director of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations (UAHC), re-
sponded:
"I would like to offer
Rabbi Riskin to join to-
gether to begin a Beth Din
in the New York area for all
branches (ofJudaism). Let's
have a consensus on di-
vorce, and bring it to our col-
leagues. We might have a
chance to serve as a model
for other cities as well."

Mondale Cited

NEW YORK — Former
U.S. Vice President Walter
F. Mondale will receive an
honorary doctorate from the
Hebrew University during
ceremonies this summer in
Jerusalem.
