LOOKING BACK On
Columns Of Yesteryears . .
Dec. 5, 1969 "During
dinner at home last week,
Lillian Brody asked son
Gerald, six-year-old offspr-
ing of Lil and Oscar, what
he had learned in school
that day .r.. and the little
lad answered, 'I learned a
kid better'n to call me a
baby!' "
Dec. 26, 1969 ...
"Grandparents Betty and
Joe Bean were driving home
their five-year-old grandson
Andy (son of Edwin and
Phyllis Bean) . . . Sitting on
her lap, Betty gave him a
hard bear hug and Andy let
out a squeal not to hug so
hard . . . Like the TV com-
mercial says, Joe repeated,
`Don't squeeze the Charmin'
. . . and little Andy came
back with, 'I'm not Charmin
— I'm Jewish.' "
March 17, 1967 ... "At
recent garden show, Lila
and Mack Rubin were all
ears as they overheard two
women discussing trailers
. . . especially Lila, who
wants to travel cross-
country in one . . . 'They do
make them lovely nowa-
days,' one woman was say-
ing, 'and some are quite as
cozy and nice as houses. But
I just couldn't stand walk-
ing in a straight line all day
long.' "
Jan. 30, 1970 ... "Little
Ronnie Gold, four-year-old
son of Frances and Nate
Gold, felt better after
Frances put some drops in
his ear, but refused to stop
sobbing . . . Aunt Nellie
Hoffman asked why he kept
on crying if his earache was
better, and Ronnie whis-
pered, 'I'm waiting for
D-Daddy to c-come home.
He's never s-seen me with
an earache.'
Feb. 13, 1970 ... "Eric
and Anne Rosenow are hav-
ing a reunion in Israel with
former fellow dwellers of
the Shanghai Ghetto .. .
The Rosenows were in
Shanghai during . World
War II, when it was occu-
pied by the Japanese forces
. . . They came there from
Germany during the Hitler
era and have lived in De-
troit since 1948 . .
'Before leaving for Israel
Feb. 15, the Rosenows wired
an ad to the Jerusalem Post
asking former members of
the Shanghai community
living in Israel to meet them
at their hotel in Tel Aviv,
where a dinner was ar-
ranged." (Eric is being hon-
ored by Israel Bonds, May 3,
1981, at Adat Shalom.)
For a Jew to cheat a Gen-
tile is worse than cheating a
Jew; for in addition to vio-
lating the moral law, it
brings Jews into contempt.
