According to Bernard

"This is an unprecedented
first meeting in modern his-
tory for Jewish cultural
leaders from around the
world at a time when Yid-
dish culture is in the very
beginnings of a renais-
sance."
Only twice before in mod-
ern Jewish world history
has there bee-n such a
gathering, both times in
Europe, he noted. The third

Mezada Probe
May Be Coming
TEL AVIV (JTA) —
Transport Minister Haim
Landau will appoint a na-
tional investigation com-
mittee to look into the sink-
ing of the Zim freighter
Mezada off Bermuda last
month if the board of in-
quiry now holding investi-
gations thinks it is war-
ranted, ministry sources
said.
The seamen's unions
have expressed concern that
the board, which started
meeting Monday, lacks the
proper authority to draw
conclusions.
Seamen's lawyers said it
could not subpoena wit-
nesses and, therefore, might
leave many questions un-
answered.
At Monday's session Zim
officials said the Mezada
captain had sounded less
worried in his reports to
Haifa than he had appar-
ently indicated in messages
to Bermuda. Events were
fast moving and the Zim
management in Haifa had
not realized how serious the
conditions were, the board
was told.

The youngster was hos-
pitalized but returned to the
hall for the marriage ce•e-
mony which continued as
planned.
